Youth ages 5-18 are invited to attend these meetings for fun and biblical fellowship. Children under the age of 5 are asked to be accompanied by an adult. Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church was established in 1890 under the vision of Rev. Downing (1863-1937), the pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, had the beautiful stained glass window installed because Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson tau
ght the Reverend Downing’s parents to read and write and instructed them in the ways of the Presbyterian Church. Jackson was a VMI professor in Lexington, Virginia before the Civil War, and was a staunch Presbyterian. When the wooden church burned in the 1950s, the window was the only item not damaged, and a brick church was erected on the site. The "Jackson Window" was again installed behind the pulpit. One of the most influential Black Churches in the Roanoke Valley, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian has a long standing commitment to the growth and development of the community and local youth. Over the years Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church has stood witness to many local cultural, social, and economic changes. Throughout the many years, Fifth Avenue has been a steadfast church home where all are welcome, and the dedicated members do great things with God's help. Today, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church commits itself to youth outreach and the up building of the Roanoke Valley through its continued community service and charitable acts.
