Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Join in this year's observance of the National Day of Prayer on May 4th, 2023. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, bringing together people of all faiths to pray for our nation and other necessary needs. This year's theme is derived from James 5:16b, Pray Fervently in Righteousness and Avail Much: "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."

Looking for ways to engage and participate?

In an age when we’re constantly bombarded with fear-inducing news headlines, the call to prayer is as relevant as ever. Many are struggling in life and need support in many ways. This is one way we can help is to pray for ourselves or for others.

The National Day of Prayer is an opportunity that anyone can participate in, regardless of beliefs or faith background, whether we’re in peace or in times of crisis.

Here’s how you can participate. At West End Presbyterian 12th % Campbell Ave SW Roanoke, VA our pastor will be out in the front of the Church offering prayers to whom wishes to have prayer or you can simply stop by and take a purple flag and plant it in the grass and pray at your convenience. This will take place from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM. This is nondenominational and open to all people.

Greeting friends, I'd like to tell you about an event that will be happening on November 5th outdoors at West End Presbyterian Church on 12th and Campbell Ave. it's World Community Day and we are placing Prayer flags to be placed or planted out on the lawn of the Church. Let's celebrate the goodness of our neighborhood and pray for someone (anyone) just come by and take a flag and place it in the ground near the church sign and spend as much time as you like. We honor you as a neighbor and wish you a blessed day and week. I will be available should you have a need for my services. Feel free to ask any questions or for a moment of my time. Remember it's on Friday the 5th of November all day. No one needs to be there for you to plant a prayer just do it for your own reasons. May the Lord bless you and keep you .

A Tribute to Evelyn from Clay Ward:
Tonight, the world lost the most amazing woman I've ever had the privilege to know and I was blessed to call her mom. A nurse for over 40 years, she touched 1000s of lives and as a mother, molded two boys (3 if you include my dad) into men. A lover of everyone, she was probably the sweetest person to exist. Tonight, as I held her hand as she took her final breath, I found it fitting, she was there to guide me into this world and I was there to guide her out. I love you mom and I will forever miss you

Growing up in my family we were committed birthday celebrators…Birthdays are a natural time to look back and see where we’ve been, because life has a way of taking us places we’d never imagined,” This Sunday may 23, on Pentecost Sunday, is the birthday of the church as an Institution, I will preach a sermon called “If We Knew Then” based on Acts 2:1-21. It just “Seems like a good time to look back to gather the courage to move forward, because the first disciples and all of us can definitely look at each other and say: Wow, if we only knew then what we know now…!

Well, Yesterday (National Day of Prayer) went very well. We had our prayer flags ready for whomever came by the opportunity to place a flag in the ground and pray. We ended up with 14 neighbors stopping by to participate and time to share if needed. Darlene Hash and Jeanette England came by to sit a while and chat and assist those who came by. Thank you to those who did come by and plant a prayer. We will continue to do this throughout the year for holidays and events.

Service for the Blessing of penance and blessing of the Ashes
On Wednesday the 17th of February we will hold a Service of Ash Wednesday, not the traditional service that we are accustomed to. With Covid -19 rules, we must be cautious and maintain safe distancing. Therefore, we will have a Service of Repentance and a blessing of the ashes. The Imposition of Ashes normally placed on the repentant sinner’s forehead will instead be lightly sprinkled on the head with the minister saying “ Believe in the Godpel of Jesus Christ and/or Remember from dust we were formed and to dust we shall return.
Q: I don’t remember reading about Ash Wednesday in the Bible. Where did the practice come from?
A: That’s true; there is no mention of Ash Wednesday in the Bible. But there is a tradition of donning ashes as a sign of penitence that predates Jesus. In the Old Testament, Job repents “in dust and ashes,” and there are other associations of ashes and repentance in Esther, Samuel, Isaiah and Jeremiah. By the 10th century, the monk Aelfric tied the practice, which dates to the eighth century, to the period before Easter, writing, “Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast.” By the 11th century, the practice was widespread throughout the church — until Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, threw the practice out in the 16th century because it was not biblically based. There’s no Lent in the Bible, either, though many Christians see it as an imitation of the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and battling with Satan in the desert.

Is God Calling Us? Are We Living God's Plan?
Eph. 3:14-21
The Letter from the Apostle Paul is yet another message of Hope in how we see ourselves doing God';s work. Paul is reinforcing the our need to believe that God is calling us to serve and believe that God has a plan for us and that we must live that Plan in accordance to God's word. Do we practice this every day or just on Sundays? Join me this Sunday as we learn how God is reaching out to us as individuals and as a church of Jesus Christ. Hope to see you Sunday
