Football in the State of Alabama, today, was filled with excitement. Not a day for “faint of heart “ fans. Both games were nail biters.

I am looking forward to beginning my service as pastor of the Roanoke Church of the Nazarene on Sunday, 7 July. I feel God has special plans for our church and invite everyone to come and see Him work.

On Sunday, 14 July, our District Superintendent Ryan Brown will formally install me as pastor. That Sunday, I will begin a series of messages from the book of Joshua. I invite you to join the journey with me as we search God's will for our lives, the life of the church and the life of the community.

The journey through Joshua will take about 9 weeks. To help us in this journey, I invite everyone to purchase a copy of a devotional guide entitled "Joshua". I will have copies available on 7 July so that we may begin our reading on Monday, 8 July. The devotional guides are $12 each ($14.95 + tax and shipping if purchased through Amazon).

Living a Life Approved by God

Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:14-16 (CSB)
[14] "Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to fight about words. This is useless and leads to the ruin of those who listen. [15] Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. [16] Avoid irreverent and empty speech, since those who engage in it will produce even more godlessness."

As I prepare for Sunday’s sermon, my heart is filled with reflections on what my Grandfather Rye taught me early in life. He often said, "If you're going to be a leader, you have to learn to follow. If you're going to be a teacher, you must be willing to learn. And if you're going to be a Christian, you must remember you were once a sinner."

These words resonate deeply with the message in 2 Timothy. Paul emphasizes the importance of our conduct and our dedication to God's truth. He warns against meaningless disputes that can lead to division and destruction. Instead, we are called to be diligent and faithful workers who rightly handle the word of truth.

Every day, I prepare myself by thanking God for the transformation He has worked in my life. It is His grace that has shaped me, turning my heart from sin and aligning it with His will. In gratitude, I present myself as a willing student of His Word, ready to follow His direction. This preparation is not just for my benefit but for the benefit of those I am privileged to lead and teach.

To be an effective leader, I must first be a faithful follower of Christ. To teach others, I must continually learn from the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures. And to guide others in their faith, I must remember the grace that saved me—a grace that is available to everyone.

This daily preparation and humility before God enable me to preach and teach not from my wisdom, but from the lessons and insights God imparts to me. In doing so, I aim to share His truth clearly and faithfully, helping others to understand and experience the same grace that transformed my life.

Paul's instruction to avoid irreverent and empty speech is a reminder to focus on what truly matters. Our words should build up, encourage. When we engage in frivolous or harmful talk, we risk leading others astray.

As we meditate on these verses, let us strive to be workers approved by God, diligently studying His Word, avoiding useless disputes, and speaking with grace and truth. Let our lives be testimonies of His transforming power, guiding others to the salvation and grace found in Jesus Christ.

The Love of the Father: A Reflection on John 3:16

**John 3:16**: *"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."*

This powerful verse encapsulates the immense love God has for us. Despite our sins and disobedience, God provided a way for us to return to Him by offering His only Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for our redemption.

The Test in the Garden

Have you ever wondered why God created just one tree in the Garden of Eden that Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat from? The Garden was filled with an abundance of trees, all bearing delicious and beautiful fruits. Yet, there was this one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, that God commanded them to avoid.

I believe this tree was a test, a means for God to see if Adam and Eve were truly satisfied with all He had provided for them. To reach this tree, they would have to pass by countless other trees, each one a testament to God's provision and generosity. It raises the question: Were they content with what God had given them, or would they reach for the one thing that was off-limits?

The Deception and the Fall

Eve was the first to succumb to temptation. The fruit of the forbidden tree must have appeared enticing, so much so that she took it and ate it without hesitation. Interestingly, she didn't hoard this fruit for herself; she handed it to Adam. This act signifies that sin often appears alluring from a distance, offering false promises of fulfillment and pleasure.

Think of anyone recovering from addiction. The allure of the high is powerful, but it is fleeting and ultimately destructive. The temporary satisfaction of sin never compares to the lasting joy found in obedience to God.

Redemption Through Christ

John 3:16 tells us that despite our failures, God's love remains steadfast. We all have sinned and fallen short, yet God, in His infinite mercy, gave His only Son to die for our sins. This sacrificial act provides us with the choice to return to our Father, to experience His forgiveness, and to live in the abundance of His blessings.

Our perspective changes when we accept God's forgiveness and embrace His love. We begin to see the beauty and provision in all that God has created for us. We no longer fixate on the forbidden fruit but delight in the countless blessings surrounding us.

Conclusion

Sin may seem tempting and desirable, but it leads to emptiness and separation from God. However, through Jesus Christ, we are offered a way back to the Father, a chance to experience His love and grace. As we walk in His forgiveness, we can appreciate the richness of His creation and live in the fullness of His blessings.

Let us remember the profound love expressed in John 3:16 and strive to live in a way that honors the sacrifice of Jesus, finding our satisfaction not in the fleeting pleasures of sin but in the eternal joy of God's presence.
