The Salvation Army Roanoke

The Salvation Army Roanoke The Salvation Army in Roanoke seeks to further the mission of The Salvation Army by meeting human needs in God's name without discrimination.

To donate: https://give.virginiasalvationarmy.org/roanoke In 1865, William Booth spent his days and nights preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute people of London, England. In his attempt to reach these people, Booth challenged the accepted concept of church and took his preaching to the streets. Booth traveled throughout England conducting eva

ngelistic meetings. Booth’s services were an instant success. He quickly became well known as a religious leader throughout London and attracted followers who were dedicated to fighting for the souls of men and women. In 1867, Booth had only 10 full-time workers, but by 1874, Booth’s followers had grown to 1,000 volunteers and 42 evangelists. At this time, the group was serving under the name “The Christian Mission.” The group officially adopted the title of “The Salvation Army” in August of 1878.

The ministry migrated to America in 1885, where The Salvation Army’s first meeting took place in Philadelphia. After receiving a warm welcome, The Salvation Army expanded its operation throughout the United States. Today, there are more than 9,000 Salvation Army centers and local neighborhood units in the United States.

Summer heat doesn’t affect everyone the same way, and extreme heat puts our most vulnerable neighbors at risk.

A broken AC, a home without shade, a night without relief can turn a heatwave into a crisis.

That’s why this season matters, and The Salvation Army is stepping in to offer cool spaces, utility bill assistance and support for neighbors who need help staying safe this summer. ☀️

Reach out locally if you need assistance or if you can lend a hand. ✨

Happy National Donut Day! Today we’ll celebrate Donut Day across the nation! Locally, we’ll be thanking community partners with some sweet treats!

Donut Day was created to honor the Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies,” who served fresh donuts and support to soldiers during World War I.

Feeling inspired? Here’s the original WWI-style donut recipe to try for yourself:

Yield: approximately 12 donuts

Ingredients:
• 1 large egg
• 1 cup flour
• ½ cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• pinch of salt
• ⅓ cup milk
• oil for frying

Directions:

Combine all ingredients (except the oil) to make the dough.
Thoroughly knead the dough, roll smooth, and cut into rings less than 1/4 inch thick. (Get creative—Salvation Army Donut Lassies used whatever they could find, from baking powder cans to coffee percolator tubes!)
Drop the rings into hot oil, turning slowly several times until golden brown.
Remove the donuts and allow excess oil to drip off.
Dust with powdered sugar, let cool, and enjoy!

If you give this historic recipe a try, tag us in your post—we’d love to see your creations! 🍩

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:7

At The Salvation Army, we live that out every day, serving families in crisis, feeding neighbors who are hungry, and offering hope to anyone who needs a place to rest and rebuild.

Because love isn’t just something we feel, it’s something we do… together.

More than a century ago, the “Donut Lassies” entered the WWI huts with hands full of flour, sugar, and the honest intention to lift the spirits of the soldiers who were far from home. Against all odds, that small act of kindness made a lasting difference.

On June 7, 1938, The Salvation Army first celebrated National Doughnut Day as a fundraiser during the Great Depression to support families facing hardship. A wonderful act that mirrored and honored the legacy of those courageous women.

Today, at The Salvation Army, we carry this purpose forward each day, meeting local needs with love and compassion through our food pantries 🍽️.

A simple recipe in action.
A lasting impact.

Because from the very beginning, the first ingredient was love.

What a joyful and inspiring day in worship today!
We celebrated the enrollment of our newest Junior and Senior Soldiers and witnessed two faithful Soldiers renew their covenant before God, reaffirming their commitment to serve Him wholeheartedly through The Salvation Army.

Adding to the joy of the day, several of our Senior Soldiers had the privilege of pinning our new Junior Soldiers, a beautiful reminder that faith is nurtured across generations and that the future of God's Kingdom is bright. Seeing our young people take their place in the life of the Corps was both encouraging and inspiring.

These special moments remind us that God is still calling people of all ages to deeper faith, greater service, and a life devoted to His purposes. We rejoice with each person who took these meaningful steps and thank God for His continued work in our Corps family.

Please join us in praying for our new Senior Soldiers, those who renewed their covenant, and our Junior Soldiers as they continue their journey of faith. May the Lord strengthen them, guide them, and use them for His glory.

"He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." – Philippians 1:6
