A wonderful day of connection, celebration, and community marked the beginning of a new program year at our 2026 Rally Day Picnic & Fall Kickoff! Surrounded by the beauty of nature at Braeloch Pavilion, our church family gathered to worship, share a meal, enjoy fellowship, and make memories together.

Our Christian Education theme this year, “This Is Our Story,” reminds us that faith is not something we experience alone. Our individual stories become part of a much larger story—God’s story—carried forward through generations and lived out in worship, learning, service, and fellowship.

What a meaningful way to begin a new season... and another chapter in our story together!

September brings a welcome return to familiar rhythms and a new season in the life of our church. On September 13, Sunday school and two worship services resume, beginning a year of discovery, connection, and growth in faith. This issue offers a thoughtful look at where we have been and where God is leading us, including our Senior Pastor’s sabbatical reflection, “The Longer Reach of Second Presbyterian Church,” along with perspectives from the Stewardship Committee and Legacy Corner.

There is much to discover and celebrate in the weeks ahead—from the dedication of our Habitat Home to the year’s Christian education theme, “This Is Our Story.” You’ll find ways to explore Scripture, build relationships, and engage with the life of the church through Bible studies, Kids’ Fellowship, Youth Group, 2PC Clubs, and other ways to connect. The issue also shares the story of the creative VBS mosaic project for our neighbors at Trinity Commons.

Open the September newsletter and see how each new season adds another chapter to our shared story at Second Presbyterian Church.

This Sunday, we’re stepping outside the sanctuary and gathering at the beautiful Braeloch Pavilion at Glenburn Farms for our Rally Day Picnic & Fall Kickoff!

We’ll begin with worship, followed by a delicious meal and a look at the many opportunities to grow, learn, serve, and get involved this fall. After lunch explore new classes, sign up for 2PC Clubs, and connect with friends old and new.

There will be plenty of fun for all ages! 🎨🎈🎣 Bring your fishing pole and bait, and enjoy a bounce house, face painting, balloon art, and more.

Love Builds Up 💜 Churchwide Retreat 2026

What a weekend! Nearly 100 of us gathered for the Churchwide Retreat and built each other up through worship, laughter, learning, conversation, and plenty of time around the table. From our youngest children to our youth and adults, it was a joy to see our church family growing closer, strengthening ties, and making memories.

We’re especially grateful for Dr. Rachel Thompson Orfield, who helped us reflect on Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians and the kind of love that builds up a community. We left the weekend grateful for the people who make our church what it is, the volunteers who made the retreat possible, and the many ways God is building us up together.

Built up in love, sent home with full hearts.

There’s a lot of history hiding in this year’s Christian Education graphic!

“This Is Our Story” — CE theme for 2026–27

This scrapbook-inspired design is filled with pieces of Second’s story—and each one connects to our four compass-cross ideals: Worship. Welcome. Seek. Serve.

Can you find…

⛪️ The original church building from 1892?

👧 The first church brownie group—an early chapter in the story of today’s Cub Scout Pack for girls?

✝️ Worship and Sacraments of Communion & Baptism?

😊 A Churchwide Retreat full of welcome?

🔨 This year’s Habitat home build—connecting a long tradition of service with a new chapter of partnership?

🎨 Ink drawings of the stained-glass window and sanctuary tower, celebrating Second’s artists and architecture?

🌸 Dogwood & redbud blooms representing the beauty growing right here on church property?

📖 And tucked into the background… Scripture and the church’s mission statement?

This is our story. And it’s still being written. 💜

The 2026–27 Christian Education Booklet detailing the many opportunities for learning and fellowship throughout the program year is now available online at spres.org!

We are so proud and grateful to commission Philip, a beloved child of Second Presbyterian Church, into his next chapter of faith and service.

Philip will spend nine months in Pristina, Kosovo, serving with the Christian and Missionary Alliance at Qendra Gërmia, a Christian community center committed to helping every person who enters feel loved and know they matter to their community and to God.

Through teaching English, leading kids’ programs and soccer, and building relationships with children and teens, Philip will share Christ’s love in a community where Christians are a minority.

Philip’s faith has been shaped deeply by this church family. He shared, “It is unlikely that my heart would have been drawn to this mission without the experiences I have had with Second Presbyterian Church. Second has served as a foundation for my faith. I particularly had a profound experience serving in the Dominican Republic on a mission trip right after I graduated; it radically transformed my faith. As the place where I was baptized, raised, confirmed, participated in youth group, served on youth council, and served as a Summer Pastoral Intern, it feels necessary to invite the church to join me on this next chapter of my faith.”

Please join us in praying for Philip as he serves, grows in faith, and walks alongside our siblings in Christ in Kosovo. We are grateful for the ways God has prepared him for this moment and excited to see where God leads him next!
