Enduring Trials
Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. - James 1:12 (CSB)
Perhaps there is no greater trial in life than a mental health problem. It can be lifelong. It can occur at any time. It can be difficult to prepare for. Warning signs are not always obvious. Symptoms can crop up unexpectedly. Then there is the stigma associated with mental health problems.
The stigmatization of a mental health problem can be the most difficult trial to face. Judgment can come from friends, family, and co-workers. This judgment is usually based out of ignorance about mental health. Even well-meaning Christians can say it’s all just a prayer problem or that you lack the faith to be healed. These words and actions are hurtful. They produce doubt and a lack of self-worth. There is a feeling of inferiority due to a mental health problem.
Fortunately this life is only temporary. There are no mental health problems in heaven. Those who endure the trials brought upon by mental health problems in this lifetime are to be crowned as winners by God. This fact can be comforting, although it is difficult to believe during a flare-up of symptoms. So ask God today for help in focusing on the crown you will receive in heaven for the trials your mental health problem has caused here on Earth.
Prayer: Lord, my mental health problem has provided many trials in my life. There have been difficulties in my personal and professional lives due to my mental health problem. I know you are righteous, Lord, and all problems are temporary. Allow me to see the crown that awaits me in heaven for being your faithful follower through life’s trials. Amen.
