Thoughts on the Lectionary for the Fourth Sunday after Easter

From the Epistle Lesson: St. James 1:17-21

Vs: 19 "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath"

James has been speaking here of the good gifts of God that He bestows on us who are his children. He has said that the unchanging God has “begotten” us of His own will by the word of His truth, and because of this we are to be an example to the world. A picture of what the “firstfruits” of God’s creatures look like. Because of this we as Christians should be all the more diligent to cast away filthy and selfish living. Let us be ever ready to hear the word of God and the pleas of our neighbor. Let us not always be quick to insist upon our opinions and ideas to be heard. And may we always have our anger in check, leaving Wrath to God who always judges right

Thoughts from the Lectionary for the Sunday next before Easter commonly called Palm Sunday

From the Epistle Lesson: Philippians 2:5 -11

Vs. 5 "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"

Paul here has been encouraging the Christians at Philippi to consider their neighbor’s situations over their own. He punctuates his argument by reminding the reader that Christ himself, though he is God in flesh, did not come to be served but to serve and give himself for his own. This “servant’s mind” is the mind that the Apostle is referring to. We are instructed to give of ourselves for our brothers and sisters in Christ just as he gave of himself for us. This servant mindset is what Scripture means when it tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves.

From the Epistle Lesson: Hebrews 9:11-15

Vs.12 "Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us."

The writer here notes that in the one sacrifice that Christ made at Golgotha, he has fulfilled all of the types and shadows of the ceremonial law that pointed to him in the Old Testament. He has obtained by his own blood poured out on the cross that which all of the sacrifices of bulls and goats under the old covenant could not. That is, our redemption from sin.

Rejoice for the price has been paid! Our salvation has been purchased by God in Christ! Rest in Him.

Thoughts on the Lectionary for Septuagesima Sunday, the third Sunday before Lent

From The Epistle Lesson: 1 Corinthians 9:24 -27

Vs 27. "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."

Paul has been telling the Corinthian church in this passage that he reaches out to people with the Gospel of Christ by relating to them “where they are”. To Jews or Gentiles alike he gives them the truth of Christ as He is.

Starting at verse 24 he begins to refer to the Christian life in the form of a race. He describes the discipline required by athletes to participate in the race and calls Christians to remember that they too are running a race not for a material crown but for an eternal and spiritual one. He reminds us to discipline ourselves that our endeavors in the Gospel not be fruitless. Though we realize that our salvation is hidden and sealed in Christ we must not take lightly the warnings of Scripture to live by the precepts of God.
