Impossible Mixtures
NOVEMBER 5, 2021

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:7-8

Galatians 5:19-21

In the ancient world, you would never see an ox and a donkey yoked together, pulling a plow. That stipulation is found in the Old Testament along with others about mixing unlike things together (Deuteronomy 22:9-11). These stipulations reflected a principle for the Israelites: Don’t be yoked together with unbelievers in Canaan. That principle made its way into the New Testament in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.

But it also reflects an even more impossible mixture: the Holy Spirit and the carnal nature of man (the flesh). When we are saved, we are delivered from the power of the carnal, sinful flesh in our life; set free to live life powered by the Spirit of God. The flesh and the Spirit are like oil and water—they simply cannot be mixed. For a Christian to manifest the nature of the flesh is a signal that something is wrong.

Life in the flesh can never be pleasing to God. It is what Christ died to deliver us from! To please God, live a life yielded to the power and guidance of the Spirit.

"The flesh is radically and wholly evil."

Known by Their Fruits

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

The Bible has contributed more expressions, idioms, and metaphors to world literature than any other source. One of the most well-known is the phrase “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Wrongly attributed to Aesop, the ancient Greek collector of stories and fables, “wolf in sheep’s clothing” comes from the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15).

How does one distinguish wolves from sheep? Jesus’ answer: “Therefore by their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:20). The true nature of people will ultimately reveal itself by their words and deeds. Paul said as much when comparing those who live by the Spirit of God and those who live according to their carnal nature. The outward manifestation of both separates the two. Specifically, those who live by the Spirit reveal the life of Christ—what Paul calls “the fruit of the Spirit.”

The fruit of the Spirit doesn’t mean perfection. But over time, Christ in us should be evident to others.

No Condemnation
NOVEMBER 3, 2021

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution—besides containing the well-known protection against self-incrimination—also contains the so-called “Double Jeopardy Clause”: “Nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.” In general, this clause protects against being tried or punished twice for the same crime.

The New Testament contains another kind of double jeopardy protection, expressed most succinctly in Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” That is, since Christ died for all our sins, we cannot be condemned and judged for sins we might commit again. If anyone—Satan in particular—should accuse us before God of being terrible sinners, Christ is there “at the right hand of God . . . [making] intercession for us” (Romans 8:34). Christ is our Advocate (attorney): “I have paid for all of his sins.”

We all sin, but Christ has paid for all our sin. Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who have accepted His payment.

Walking in the Spirit
NOVEMBER 2, 2021

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:2

Romans 8:11

A man in one early chapter of Acts was confused about the work of the Holy Spirit. He thought he could have the power of the Holy Spirit without a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. He thought he could buy the Holy Spirit’s power with money—which led to a sharp rebuke from the apostles (Acts 8:9-25).

At Pentecost, Peter spelled it out clearly: “Repent . . . be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ . . . and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). Life in the Spirit is preceded by life in Christ—faith and repentance of sin so that Christ’s Lordship is the priority in our life. We can’t walk in the Spirit while grieving the Spirit with sin (Ephesians 4:30). When Christ is Lord, the fruit of the Holy Spirit—that is, the life of Christ in us—becomes evident to those around us (Galatians 5:16, 22-23).

If Christ is the Lord of your life, the presence and power of the Holy Spirit are yours. Walking in the Spirit means walking with Christ.

"He who has the Holy Spirit in his heart and the Scriptures in his hands has all he needs."
Alexander MacLaren

Once and Forever

For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh.

Bob Ebeling spent a third of his life consumed with guilt. He was one of the engineers connected to NASA, and he worried that cold temperatures would cause the 1986 Challenger space shuttle to explode. Ebeling was so concerned that he called his boss, and they assembled data that would demonstrate the risk. When NASA proceeded with the launch anyway, Ebeling watched in horror as the Challenger exploded. He spent nearly the rest of his life overwhelmed with guilt, thinking he could have done more to delay the launch. Shortly before his recent death at age 89, Ebeling said he had found peace.[1]

It’s terrible to live a life consumed with guilt. Few of us have to face the explosion of a spacecraft, but we all look back on our lives with our share of regrets. But God doesn’t intend for us to live any longer in the sins He has washed away by the blood of Jesus. Our Lord’s blood is an acid that eats away at the corrosive guilt that can rust out our heart.

In Christ, there is no condemnation.

"Jesus’ death is the only real answer to our guilt."

Power of the Gospel
OCTOBER 29, 2021

Ruth 4:9-12

Modern planning, decision making, and strategizing take place in designated “rooms.” In government, it might be a “situation room.” In the military, it might be a “war room.” And in the corporate world, it would likely be a “boardroom.” But in the ancient world, much of the governance of a large city would take place at the city gate. The central gate of a city was more than just an opening in the wall; it contained room for a gathering of elders and leaders to deliberate (Lamentations 5:14).

When Jesus told Peter and the disciples that “the gates of Hades” would not prevail against His Church, He may have had this ancient role of a gate in mind. In other words, no plans or deliberations by the enemies of God would ever prevail against the Church. “Hades” was a Greek term for the underworld, generally equivalent to the Hebrew Sheol. So no powers of darkness or of hell will ever overcome the people of God.

The Gospel has the same power today as it had in the first century—it is the “power of God” (Romans 1:16).
