Teen Challenge is the oldest, largest and most successful program of its kind in the world, and was founded over 50 years ago by Reverend David Wilkerson. It was Feb. 28, 1958 when the 26-year-old Pentecostal preacher from rural Pennsylvania disrupted a highly publicized murder trial in New York City. Wilkerson had made the eight-hour drive from his quiet mountain town to downtown Manhattan for a

simple reason; to speak to the seven accused gang members about their salvation. In a grave attempt to share the love of God, Wilkerson rushed to the front of the courtroom at the close of trial proceedings and pleaded publicly with the judge for permission to meet the teenage defendants. News media were everywhere, and Wilkerson unwittingly made himself the source of headline news throughout New York City. The judge had been receiving death threats during the trial, and Wilkerson was almost arrested as a presumed assailant. The judge later refused Wilkerson's request to see the boys and ordered him never to return to his courtroom. Wilkerson made more than the news back in 1958; five months after his discouraging day in court, his compassion for teen-age gangs and drug addicts began to make history. Since Wilkerson opened the first center in New York in 1960, Teen Challenge has grown to over 195 centers across the nation and over 550 centers worldwide. In Puerto Rico and parts of Africa the organization is building AIDS care facilities. Wilkerson also founded a global evangelistic ministry, World Challenge. Yet the Pentecostal preacher remains today what he was over 50 years ago; a man dedicated to preaching the gospel in the heart of New York City. He pastors Times Square Church in Manhattan, which he founded in 1987. Teen Challenge of Southern California was established in 1963 and includes eight regional residential facilities throughout Southern California. Last year Teen Challenge served over 200,000 men, women and children in Southern California through its resident and outreach programs. The Teen Challenge residential program continues to be one of the largest and most effective substance abuse recovery and prevention programs of its kind. Teen Challenge Southern California is a non-profit organization that relies entirely on the generous donations, funding and volunteer efforts of both individuals and organizations throughout our communities in order to offer services at no cost to the individual. We know that community involvement and support is an essential component of recovery and necessary to providing services that address the specific needs of the communities involved. It is the mission of Teen Challenge to provide youth, adults and children an effective and comprehensive faith-based solution to drug and alcohol addiction as well as other life-controlling problems. We are committed to enabling and equipping those we serve to find freedom from addictive behavior, to become socially and emotionally healthy, physically well and spiritually alive. Teen Challenge reaches out to people from all backgrounds, with particular emphasis on the urban poor, women, and ethnic minorities. We also give back to the communities we are in with outreaches, events, after-school programs and much more.

Sometimes the storm comes before the calm, but Jesus is present in both. In this week’s New Life with Ron Brown, we’re reminded that when the winds blew and the waves crashed, Jesus was still in the boat with His disciples. Fear and doubt may try to rob you of peace, but Satan is a liar and Jesus is Truth. You can trust Him in the calm and know He will never abandon you in the storm.

Some songs become personal after you’ve walked through enough life with God. “God, I’m Just Grateful” is one of those songs.

For the men and women singing in this room, these weren’t just words on a screen. They were memories. Hospital rooms. Altars. Late-night prayers. Freedom from addiction. Second chances. Grace that kept showing up again and again.

“All my life You’ve been right here by my side.”

A beautiful moment led by Jeffrey Dickson, Brandon Muchow, Jana McVay, and the Teen Challenge Alumni Choir during Spiritual Emphasis.

Special thanks to Harvest Christian Fellowship for welcoming the entire TCSC family with such generosity and love this week.

Spiritual Emphasis always carries a kind of holy nostalgia.

The sound of worship rising from people who know what it means to be rescued. The pages of Bibles filled with scribbled prayers, underlined promises, and verses that carried people through impossible nights. The many staff members honored for years of faithful service. The moments as people leaned into the Word Pastor Ron Brown brought with such conviction. The embrace of friends who survived the same storms.

And then, the ocean of hands raised, not just in surrender, but stretched toward Heaven, reaching for the hands of the greatest Love the world has ever known. Tears of joy replacing years of sorrow. Chains hitting the ground. The quiet miracle of people leaving the past behind and stepping into freedom.

Tuesday night reminded us that God still meets people here. And this was only the beginning.

There are moments in life when the battle feels overwhelming, the pressure closes in, and fear tries to take over. But God’s Word still stands true:

“Do not be afraid or discouraged… For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” — 2 Chronicles 20:15

What a powerful moment with the TCSC Worship Team and Jeffrey Dickson singing “Battle Belongs.” If you’re walking through a fight today, don’t forget who goes before you. Keep worshipping. Keep trusting. The battle belongs to Him.

This moment was captured live during Spiritual Emphasis at Harvest Christian Fellowship. We’re deeply thankful for Harvest’s partnership and for the opportunity to gather together in God’s presence.

“My God is awesome… He can move mountains.”
A powerful moment from Spiritual Emphasis as and the TCSC Worship Team lifted up the name of Jesus. In every valley, every storm, every broken place… He remains faithful, powerful, and worthy of our worship. 🙌 We have Victory in Jesus!

The Bible calls us to give honor where honor is due, and we did just that by celebrating 11 incredible staff members from our centers at Spiritual Emphasis! These dedicated heroes have been shining their light for 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years, pouring their hearts into the transformative mission of Teen Challenge. They’ve been part of many, many lives being set free, restored, and redeemed by the power of the Cross of Jesus Christ. Let’s raise the roof and give a thunderous cheer for these amazing servants of God!

“Let God give you your dream back.” - Pastor Ron Brown

43 years ago, the first Spiritual Emphasis took place in Riverside, CA. Since then, this movement of the Holy Spirit has continued every single year, with thousands upon thousands of lives redeemed and restored. We’re underway in Day 2, and God is still in the business of reviving dreams. Don’t give up on what He placed in you.

Two calls. One decision. Pastor Ron Brown broke it down: the call to salvation & following Jesus, and the call to serve in His Kingdom. Which one is God speaking to you about today?

05/20/2026

He is worthy of it all, and today, we felt it. Day 1 of Spiritual Emphasis had our staff and students encountering God's presence in a powerful way. All glory to Him for His goodness. This is just the beginning.
