Riverside Baptist Church

Riverside Baptist Church Pastor Newton's Sermon archives can be found on the church's web page at www.rbctx.org. Whatever the reason, Riverside is a great place to live! E.D. During Bro.

The town of Riverside only boasts a population of 451, yet the census bureau tells us that there are some 7,000 residents living within a 5 mile radius of our church. Many move into our area planning for retirement on the river, while others come looking for job opportunities with the state. Riverside Baptist Church was organized in 1902 and shared the Methodist Church by having services every oth

er Sunday. The church continued this practice for thirty years until the first building was erected in 1937. To date the church has been pastored by 27 pastors, and its first full time pastor was Bro. Coleman who served the church from 1972 to 1995. Coleman’s leadership the church built the parsonage and the sanctuary building in 1975 and then the education building in 1979. In 1995 the church became debt free after paying off these mortgages. Pastor Newton came to be the church’s pastor in May of 1996 by a unanimous vote of 108 members. In 1997 the church bought the surrounding property to increase its land size from 1.4 acres to now 7.25 acres. In 2000 the church added a new multi-purpose room to the education building as well as adding a covered walkway between the two buildings. This work included major renovations to the existing buildings to bring them up to date. The church has approved a long range master plan that has envisioned to someday include a new 400-500 seat auditorium where the old church building used to be as well as a Youth Education building, a Family Life Center, and open pavilion. All this on a beautifully landscaped campus. Along with the additional physical plant facilities, the church hopes to start a private Christian School, a Youth Center, a sports program and a wide variety of activities for our retired senior adult community.

Proverbs 22:4 "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life."

Two of the greatest qualities a man of God can have is humility and a fear or reverence of the Lord. Throughout the Proverbs we find these qualities extolled as necessary for success in the life of a believer. They do not come easily but are qualities that are learned as we face the opposition of life. Let's take humility. Webster defines it as "the state or quality of being humble; freedom from pride and arrogance; lowliness of mind; a modest estimate of one's own worth; a sense of one's own unworthiness through imperfection and sinfulness; self-abasement; humbleness." We learn from scripture God's disdain for pride and His love of humility. Isaiah 57:15 tells us, "For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." And in James 4:6, "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." God finds His place with those who are given to humility, who understand their inabilities and find their strength in the Lord, not in themselves. To live in the strength of the Lord is the place of riches, honor and life; it will never be found in promoting ourselves or running in our own strength.

Then let's consider the fear of the Lord. This is mentioned so many times as a quality of true believer. Proverbs uses this term in fourteen verses and in them we can find its true definition. Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 8:13 tells us, "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate." Proverbs 14:27 continues with, "The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." In Proverbs 16:6 we find its association with mercy and truth, "By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil." Then in Proverbs 23:17 we are told, "Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long." To fear the Lord is to have reverence to His righteousness and recognize our inability to obtain it short of God giving it to us. This is the place where we find the victory over sin, pride, arrogance. To fear the Lord is to realize we are nothing without Him and that it is only through His grace and His willingness to give us what we do not have, that we can worship and serve Him.

If there is a so-called secret to life, here it is; seek humility and the fear of the Lord. There is where we will find true riches, honor and life. Riches not wrapped in gold or silver but in an acceptance of God. Honor, not of men but of the Lord, Himself. And life, not of satisfying our own desires but a life that is truly worth living, one dedicated to pleasing the Lord. Can you see the truth of this proverb? When we find those qualities that only God can give us, we then will pursue what God has intended for us; a life of real value. One that is filled with the richness of walking in the light of our Lord, honored by Him with a life that will be filled with purpose and value only found in Him.

Reading from Proverbs 21

Proverbs 21:31 "The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD."

So many truths found in a chapter of Proverbs. In this chapter, we could take off in just about any direction and find a truth that we could use for today. I have chosen verse 31 as it speaks to me of the importance of keeping our priorities straight. We are so quick to jump off into activities that seem extremely important without stopping long enough to consider the one that is completely in charge. We become like the private who thinks he can win a battle by himself if he just has his rifle with him never stopping to consider there is a whole army of individuals who also have rifles waiting for him. In that moment it might be good to listen to the general to get the orders for how we can really be an asset to the whole battalion.

This verse speaks of this very thing. We spend our day preparing our horse for a battle, but we would be better off if we just spent time with the general, that is where our safety lies. How much time do you spend in preparation for your day? Remember this is a day that you have not lived yet, and there are encounters and activities that you have not even begun to think about. Our thoughts are about the accomplishments that we plan for the day, but we have not thought about the obstacles that might get in the way. In this way we have spent our time preparing the horse for battle. But there waiting on us at the kitchen table or in the living room is the one who has already been through this day, has seen the pitfalls we will encounter and if we would just take the time to sit still and listen, He could prepare us to safely orchestrate the day. Makes me wonder why we get in such a hurry to run into a battle thinking we are prepared when we haven't even begun to realize the pitfalls that wait on us.

The safety for the day, is found in the Lord! You have taken the time to look into God's word today and hopefully it was at the beginning of your day. The morning is the time for planning and not at the end of the day in a time of regretting the impulsive decisions that have made the day a failure. For the Lord to give us the instruction for safely navigating our day, it takes consistency and faithfulness to the act of listening and looking through the pages of instruction He gives us. You have opened that door today, now remember, the Lord will be looking for you in the morning to go over the plans for tomorrow. Make sure you are on time and before you begin preparing that horse for the battle, find your safety in the Lord.

Reading from Proverbs 20
A Moment with the Master
Reading through the Bible one chapter a day

Proverbs 20:29 "The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head."

Again out of all the many thoughts presented in this chapter of Solomon's proverbs, this one is the one that spoke to me. Aging is a tough pill to swallow and it slips up on us so quickly. As I have aged I have come to see and realize the strength of young men is truly their glory. We came through those years not afraid to tackle anything. We made it a point of honor to exhibit our strength whether it was in physical or mental strength, we would feel pride in our abilities. Even today, we elders find ourselves in need of help from those who are younger, those who have their strength. We remember the days when our fathers would call on us to lend a hand, to provide the strength they needed to accomplish a task, but as we have aged, those days are just memories and now we must call on our sons to take up our slack. Praise the Lord, for those young men that see it as an honor to bless those who have done the work before and now need a little help.

I remember, as do all of us who have come to the age described here in this text, the men of gray hair, how being old seemed so far away. Then, almost as if in a day, we turn and look and our full head of hair has become bald and what hair we have has turned gray. But then we realize that with that gift of age comes the gift of wisdom and gained knowledge. Experience has replaced education and our lives are full. Where before we enjoyed finding the new experiences that would challenge our knowledge we now find our greatest joy in the relationships that have been built and nurtured to maturity. Our children and our grandchildren provide the greatest joy and our love for watching them learn and grow through the experiences we have already gone through allows us to calmly know that they are going to be alright. Age is truly a gift from God. One we struggle with because we are not always ready to relinquish our youthful strength, but then as this text says, there is beauty in our acquired age.

So then dear child of God, if you are the young then recognize the glory of your strength and use it to honor your Lord, ready to serve, ready to be used by Him to accomplish those tasks He sets before you. And you who have realized your blessing of age, find your beauty, not in your strength but in your wisdom and experience. Share your found love of God with anyone that will listen. Do not be discouraged with the problems of aging, but instead honor those times as recognition of accomplishing the plan God has had for your life. We need each other, young and old, so be there to provide your quality of character to the other as God has planned at this time of your life.

Reading from Proverbs 19
A Moment with the Master
Reading through the Bible one chapter a day

Proverbs 19:21 "There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand."

Isn't it easy for us to run along in our own wisdom, just figuring things out without any care as to what God thinks about it all. I can tell you that as human beings, God has given each of us a most wonderful gift, the gift of common sense, the gift of reason. It is the self appointed wisdom that we can look at something and quickly tell what is wrong or why it is right. Sometimes this kind of wisdom gets skewed by the influence of outside sources. These sources twist the truth just enough to throw what we should know as truth out of line and before we realize it, our heart is telling us one thing and the word of God is telling us something completely different.

Consider in the very beginning how the Lord had presented Adam with a truth that would protect him from spiritual death. The Lord's truth was "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Genesis 2:16-17) All Adam had to do in order to continue in a direct fellowship with the Lord, was avoid that one tree; how simple, just common sense would say to stay away from that fruit. But then, Satan twisted the truth and asked, if God had forbidden they not eat of every tree in the garden, presenting a twist that would question God's truth. When Eve answered him that they were just forbidden to eat of the one tree or they would die, Satan gives truth a full twist and declared that they would not die, that God was not telling them the truth, but was holding something back from them. Isn't that what temptation does? It tells us that whatever it is that we want we should take it, even if it violates God's truth. It tells us it is worth it in order to have something God is trying to hold back from us. Like our verse says "There are many devices in a man's heart." God has given us the ability to make our own decisions, but we really need to consider how easily we are detoured from the truth. If that is the problem we have by our yielding to the temptation of sin, then we should walk in the counsel of the Lord because it is the real truth! Dear child of God let us use our God given common sense that would say it is always far better to live in obedience to the One who desires the best for our lives than to give into the one who seeks to destroy our lives. The Lord warns of this in John 10:10, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
