Today's Elul Reflection is from Max.

This was a year of milestones: my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary, my sister’s graduation from college, my dog’s first birthday, and many friends’ weddings.

This year also had somber milestones like the death of my Zadie, but those help me to feel connected too. In shared grief, it was bittersweetly easy to find company with people with similar experiences. Through sharing memories, I was able to deepen my connection with someone who I loved.

Each year contains multitudes of milestones for each of us and sharing them with my community in joy and sorrow together continually makes me feel connected.

Today's Elul Reflection is from Deb.

Whenever I see a hummingbird in my yard, I am reminded of my dad. Soon after he died, while I was sitting shiva, a hummingbird began frequenting the garden. It was the first time I had ever seen a hummingbird in our yard. Since then, I have come to count on their seasonal visits each year.

Watching these tiny yet resilient creatures remind me of my dad’s quiet and steady presence. Their brief visits to the bee balm, followed by a sudden burst of energy, always bring warmth, wonder, and light to my day. These fleeting moments feel like a gift—a small connection to my dad and an honor to his memory.

Today's Elul Reflection is from Oscar.

Emanu-El invites me to STOP and reflect on the numinous for a moment, while also keeping me “plugged in” to a community grounded in the here and now.

Today's Elul Reflection is from Lloyd.

Being Jewish is easy, it is part of how I describe myself. It is one item on a relatively long list including the following: husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, community member, etc.

But the completion changes and our life changes when we put “Jewish” in front of each of the items listed above. What in life is different about a Jewish husband, a Jewish father or a Jewish community member?

The one thing each of us control is how we define ourselves. My hope for the coming year is that each of us will willingly add the “Jewish” to each of the elements of our self-description and our actions. We will be more complete persons, and the world will be a better place.

Much love,
Lloyd
