God will never give you more than you can handle is not a promise from the Bible. It is a paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 10:13, and that verse is about temptation, not suffering. Three chapters into a different letter, Paul says the pressure he faced in Asia went past his own ability to endure, and he says it happened on purpose.

If you have been breaking under a weight and quietly filing it as evidence that your faith failed, you were graded on a test God never wrote. What's actually promised when the weight refuses to shrink isn't a ceiling. It is a supply.

God never promised manageable trouble. He promised sufficient grace.

What happened at The Gathering was more than a joint service.

As we worshiped alongside our sisters and brothers from Ebenezer Baptist Church, shared a meal, and talked with one another, something beautiful happened. There was joy in the room. There was connection. It reminded us that we are part of one body, serving one Savior and carrying one message of hope.

For a hybrid church like ours, gathering in person with another congregation showed us what's possible when churches choose partnership over isolation.

What if churches with different gifts, resources, and spaces could come together more often to worship, fellowship, and serve our communities? What if we could strengthen one another without each church having to carry every burden alone?

The Gathering gave us a glimpse. We are grateful to Ebenezer Baptist Church for the welcome, the worship, and the fellowship. We are praying about what God may be building next.

Somebody found the paperwork.

A renovation on the west side turned up Sunday school records and newspaper clippings with two names on them. Ebenezer. Mars Hill. Both churches on one joint service at Navy Pier, generations back.

We have been in the same city and the same district the whole time.

So this Sunday we are not running two services. We are running one.

Nobody held a funeral for the life you planned.

There was no card, no plate, no service. So you filed it under moving on and went back to work.

And you have been rowing ever since with a passenger nobody talks about: the version of you who was supposed to have that life. He does not row. He grades. He holds this Tuesday up against the Tuesday you had planned.

This message closes the WHO'S IN YOUR BOAT series by naming the last passenger, and this one shares your name.

We walk through three texts. Ecclesiastes 3 puts uprooting on God's list. Philippians 3:13-14 shows Paul releasing his résumé and not his failure. Isaiah 43:19 promises a road that runs through the wilderness and not back through the city.

If you are grieving a future instead of a person, this one is for you.

Big Idea: The last passenger you have to release is not a person. It is the version of you who was supposed to have that life.

You answered everybody again today. And the thing God actually gave you to build didn't move an inch.

There's a man in the Bible who got called off his assignment four times in one chapter. He never explained himself once. He said no and kept building.

This Sunday, we're asking the question most of us are avoiding: what happens if you finally stop coming down?

The name lit up your phone and your stomach dropped before you even answered. Not a stranger. Somebody who shares your last name. And that's exactly why you couldn't say no.

In Week 2 of WHO'S IN YOUR BOAT, we walk through Genesis 27-31 — Jacob, Esau, and Laban — and find that Jacob's deepest wounds all shared his last name. His uncle exploited him for twenty years. His brother wanted him dead. "Honor your father and mother" was never a command to hand your family the keys to your peace. You can honor someone and still not obey them.

This week's practice: Name one family relationship where "honor" has meant "unlimited access," and hold one clear limit this week.

It is 11:47 on a Tuesday night. Your phone lights up with their name and your stomach drops before you unlock the screen. You have rehearsed the same conversation in the shower for three years and nothing has changed except your blood pressure. You call it loyalty. Your body calls it something else.

Galatians 6:7-8 says you reap what you sow. Nobody told you the rest of it. You don't just reap what you plant. You reap what everybody standing next to you plants, every conversation, every late-night call, every time you let them back in. Paul never said you'd harvest what you meant to grow. He said you'd harvest what was planted. Somebody has been planting in you for years. Week 3 names them.

This week's practice: Name one friendship or dating relationship that keeps producing a harvest you don't want, and decide what access it loses this week.

A word before you watch: this message is not about marriage. That covenant gets its own Sunday. And if someone is putting their hands on you, that is not a boundary conversation. That is an exit. Don't make it alone.
