The church bells rang for the last time today in Ripley. As Jesus said on the cross, ”It is finished.”

Today, Lefty officially hung up his apron. It was the last Lefty’s Grill. What began as a one-time event for 125th anniversary of Ripley Methodist Church in 2014, grew into a regular fundraiser/community outreach. We served local residents, and as word spread, we had visitors from California and many states in between. The record has to go to the young family who came from India for a Lefty’s Grill burger (an American who really missed all-beef burgers). We had to ask for help to take orders and serve people, as it got pretty hectic at times. We have had Lefty’s Grill every summer except 2020….the church was temporarily closed during the pandemic. But we enthusiastically returned in 2021, and so did our wonderful friends, who have supported this church through this little fundraiser. Sadly, RUMC is closing, so we must say good bye.

Our last day featured perfect weather, lots of friendly faces (43, to be exact). But Lefty decided to leave his mark, by creating the Ultimate Lefty’s Grill Burger—an Italian sausage, hot dog and beef patty on a brioche bun. This monster burger was gleefully consumed by Phil Mosley.

We had a good run—it was a lot of work, but the most fun we’ve ever had in our lives. We thank all of you for your support and your friendship. God bless you all. You are the best!!

Resolution: Posted August 23, 2022

Whereas Ripley United Methodist Church has been located in Ripley, Maine since its incorporation in 1889 and has faithfully served God and its community for all those years. And whereas, after careful prayer, study, and discernment, on Sunday, September 11, 2022 at a properly called Church Conference, members of the congregation gave thanks to God for the life and history of the Ripley United Methodist Church and voted to declare it closed, effective September 25, 2022.

Be It Further Resolved that the Ripley United Methodist Church in Ripley, Maine directs (with the affirmation of the District Superintendent, the Director of Congregational Development, The District Board of Building and Location, and the support of the Cabinet) that the NEAC trustees dedicate all real, personal, tangible and intangible property assets (including assets from the sale of any property) minus any outstanding financial obligations be held in trust in the Hebrews 11 Fund.

Important Announcement: Today at church, we had an informal meeting. It is not official yet, but it looks like our church will be closing after 133 years of continuous ministry. Dwindling church attendance, lack of income, rising fuel costs, and impossibly expensive needed repairs to the church building have led us to this decision. September 25, 2022 will probably be the last church service at Ripley United Methodist Church. Join us if you can, at 11:00 a.m. to say goodbye. God bless you all.
