WE started a new SS unit this week!

Jesus is born! The Old Testament is full of God’s promises to send a Messiah, a Savior. And now, with the birth of Jesus, the Savior has come.

When we think about Jesus’ birth, it’s easy for us to think about the picture of a baby lying in a manger surrounded by cattle and shepherds, but don’t miss the clear connection to God’s overarching purpose in this lesson. God sent His Son to rescue people from the clutches of sin and the penalty of death.

In yesterdays lesson, we explored the thread of salvation from the birth of Jesus to the birth of the first church.

Along the way, we saw how easy it is to be tempted to trust in other sources of salvation, forgetting that Jesus alone supplies the remedy to our greatest need.

It's crazy to think that God's love for us never stops.

We see and criticize the Israelites for their back-and-forth worship of idols, and seeminglly half heaerted repentance.

But can we not be the same way sometimes, if not all the time?

We go to our phone instead of our bible. We go to a relationship instead of prayer. We choose work, or sports, or anything over church.

We are the same, and guess what, God loves us the same. NOW He wants us to come to him. He wants us to repent and turn his direction, but we can only do that with a heart change.

Once we realize our need for a savior, only then can our love overflow for him.

But praise be to him his love is never ending. Never stopping. Always surrounding us.

Jesus had a lot of conversations, particularly around a table, with a meal.

There is a lot we can learn from these conversations. About who He is, why He came, and how much he loves us.

Come, bring a bible, and a friend, and let's learn together.

As we progress through the big-picture story of the Bible, this is your last lesson in the Old Testament. And it serves as a bridge, of sorts, from the story of the Old Testament to the story of the New Testament.

As we have learned thus far, all Scripture points toward Christ and His coming. But the Old Testament prophecies were so much more direct in doing this. There are hundreds and hundreds of prophecies that predicted Jesus’ coming.

We used this lesson in Isaiah as a representative example of how God revealed the coming of the Messiah.

Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, God spoke through Isaiah to give God’s people hope.

The same message gives us hope today.

Simon was too proud to admit he needed just as much grace and forgiveness as this woman, and his level of love reflected that.
But the woman was well aware of how costly her forgiveness was, and her love was a reflection of it.
Forgiveness was readily available for both Simon and this woman; it only took humility and loving submission to Jesus to receive it.
We don’t know how Simon responds at the very end of this story, but that doesn’t have to be true for you.
You can decide for yourself right now.

Nehamiah! What an awesome story to start our week. We saw the lengths that Nehemiah took to rebuild the wall in Jerusalem, and are encouraged to know God will go to much more lengths to bring back the NEW Jerusalem! Use these devotions this week to keep the discussion going.
