October 24-30 is Disarmament Week. In the 1990s, the Quaker United Nations Office helped its stakeholders work together to create the Mine Ban Treaty. This treaty, also known as the Ottawa Treaty, prohibits the stockpiling and production of mines. 162 countries signed the treaty, but the United States is not among them.
In 2025, several countries withdrew from the treaty. These countries include Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland, all countries that have been impacted by the War in Ukraine.
