The Church of God movement teaches conditional security, meaning that salvation is secure in Christ as believers continue to live in faith and relationship with Him. Salvation is not something a person accidentally loses through a mistake, struggle, or moment of weakness. Rather, it is understood as a relationship that can be intentionally abandoned. God’s grace remains available, but human freedom also remains, meaning a person can choose to walk away from faith. Jesus points to this ongoing relationship in John 15:6 (NIV): “If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” The emphasis is on remaining in Him, not on fear of accidental failure.

Conditional security emphasizes that salvation is grounded in a continuing, living faith rather than only a past moment of decision. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to continue and remain faithful. Hebrews 3:12 (NIV) warns, “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.” Likewise, Colossians 1:22–23 (NIV) speaks of reconciliation “if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.” In this understanding, salvation is not misplaced like lost keys nor taken away without awareness; instead, it is forfeited when someone knowingly and deliberately turns away from Christ. The focus remains encouragement to keep walking with Jesus, trusting that while God never stops reaching out, people still retain the freedom either to remain in that relationship or to walk away from it.
