The Global Methodist Church was formed because many believed our previous Methodist organization was moving away from its historic understanding of biblical authority, Christian doctrine, and discipleship, and they desired a denomination committed to maintaining those convictions.
The GMC was not primarily formed over a single issue, though human sexuality became the most visible point of conflict. The deeper disagreements involved:
• The authority and interpretation of Scripture
• Whether church doctrine should adapt to changing culture
• The role of accountability in Christian discipleship
• The mission of making disciples who follow Jesus in holiness of life
• How bishops and denominational leaders exercise authority and accountability
Many who helped form the GMC believed the theological divisions within the old denomination had become irreconcilable and that commitments made following a 2019 General Conference were not being honored. They concluded that a new denomination was necessary to preserve historic Wesleyan Christianity.
The Global Methodist Church was officially launched on May 1, 2022. Though still a young denomination, it has experienced remarkable growth, with thousands of congregations and hundreds of thousands of members across the United States, Africa, Europe, the Philippines, and other parts of the world.
In just a few years, the GMC has become one of the fastest-growing Methodist movements in recent history, driven by a desire for biblical faithfulness, disciple-making, and Spirit-empowered ministry.
The Global Methodist Church is a movement that is:
• Scripture-centered
• Jesus-focused
• Spirit-empowered
• Mission-driven
For many GMC churches, the question was never simply, “What denomination do I belong to?” Rather, it was, “Will our church remain rooted in the faith once delivered to the saints?”
The Global Methodist Church was formed so that Methodists who desired to remain firmly rooted in Scripture, committed to historic Christian teaching, accountable in discipleship, and passionate about making disciples of Jesus Christ would have a place to faithfully carry out that mission.
