August 29 – The Passion of Saint John the Baptist

Today we remember the Passion of Saint John the Baptist, the courageous herald of Christ who remained steadfast to God’s truth even unto death. Silenced by martyrdom for confronting injustice and immorality, John’s witness proclaims that faithfulness to God often requires fearless sacrifice.

His example challenges us, as members of the Order of Malta, to live with the same moral clarity and resolve—standing up for the dignity of every human life, speaking truth with love, and serving the poor, the suffering, and the forgotten with courage and compassion.

O God, who kept your servant Toscana unscathed by the turbulence of this world both as a wife and as a widow, and made her the instrument in our Order of a remarkable work of charity for the poor, grant us the grace of serving you as she did and of pleasing you by our faith and by our actions.
