When God says “I have set my bow in the clouds,” the Hebrew word there is “qeshet.” And “qeshet” is the normal, everyday Hebrew word for a battle bow, a military weapon, the kind a warrior takes into war— same word used archery, for warfare, and for divine judgement all throughout the Old Testament.
So picture this: God just sent the flood and destroyed the entire world- now the war is over and He takes His weapon and hangs it up in the sky for everyone to see.
Next time you see a rainbow in the sky, take note of this: the curve points upward, away from the earth.
Ancient theologians noticed this and said the weapon is turned away from humanity.
God is not aiming at us anymore.
He hung His war bow in the sky, pointing away from us as a sign that the judgement is done.
The rainbow is not a decoration. It’s not something to be taken and twisted into some worldly cause. It is the representation of the covenant that God made with Noah so so many years ago; a covenant that said He would never destroy the earth by flood again. His weapon of war is hanging in the sky to show us that the battle is over, that He has been victorious, and He loves us too much to let us keep living a life of destruction.
