Today, August 29th, commemorates the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, the Patron Saint of the Order of Malta. This is one of the oldest feasts within the Church, the Memorial of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. Just as John preceded Jesus in birth, preaching, and baptizing, so too did he precede Jesus in death, dying as a prefiguration of the one who would give His life sacrificially on the Cross.
With St. John the Baptist as a spiritual role model, the Order of Malta must be commended for its commitment to reaching its spiritual perfection within the Church and to expanding its energies serving the Lord's poor and the sick for over 900 years.

May God bless all members of the Order of Malta worldwide. And, Saint John the Baptist, pray for us.

Today, May 15th, is the Feast Day of St. Dymphna, the patron saint of the mentally ill, victims of in**st and domestic abuse, and runaways. She inspires us to be resilient against the world's evils and that God will never forsake us despite any evil we might suffer.
The Mental Wellbeing Ministry of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Tappahannock, VA, joined with Chris Day, Jean Ann Sanford, and Arn Manella of the Richmond Region of the Federal Association, Order of Malta, in a Healing Mass that included Anointing of the Sick. Father Gerald Musuubire, Pastor, celebrated the Mass. Four parish Mental Wellbeing Ministry members, including Cathy and Carl Hayden, recently received certification as Mental Health First Aiders through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.
A temporary shrine to Saints Dymphna, Bernadette, and Therese of Lisieux, including their relics, is joined by an Icon of Our Lady of Philermos, the most sacred representation to which the Knights of the Order of Malta are devoted resides in the Commons and will remain until the end of the month. Alongside the shrine is a plinth with a basket containing bottles of Holy Water from the 2024 Order of Malta pilgrimage to Lourdes.
God Bless us, everyone. St. Dymphna, pray for us.

Saint Nuno Álvares Pereira:

Saint Nuno de Santa Maria Alvares Pereira Religious and Prior of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta Memorial

He was born July 24, 1360 at Santares, Portugal and he died Easter Sunday, April 1, 1431. He was a cousin of the founder of the Braganza family, the extant royal house of Portugal. He entered the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem and of Rhodes at the age of 23.

At the age of 25, while serving King John I as Constable (military commander) he defeated a much larger invading Castilian army, thereby ensuring Portugal’s independence. Renowned in all of Europe as one of the most famous knights of his age, he was Constable (Grand Marshal, military commander) of the Kingdom of Portugal and also Prior of the Order of Saint John in Portugal.

He was outstandingly generous and charitable towards the poor, and in later life became a lay-brother in the Carmelite Order where he was remarkable for his devotion to Our Lady and humbly undertook the meanest of duties.
