French artist, Henri Matisse, once said, “It is my dream to create an art which is filled with balance, purity and calmness, freed from a subject matter that is disconcerting or too attention-seeking. In my paintings, I wish to create a spiritual remedy, similar to a comfortable armchair…”
Driving home from literacy center today, the four young children in my car simultaneously noticed a stunning sunset that was unfolding as we sat in traffic on the downtown expressway. The “oohs and ahhs” followed. And then of course, the obligatory, “I saw it first!” After merging onto 95 and then exiting onto Oliver Hill Way toward our McD’s destination, I heard a voice from the back say, “Mr. Peters? I feel like I want to cry.” I asked, “Why?” She said, “It’s so beautiful, it makes me want to cry.” Gulp! I recognized I was experiencing a Holy Moment.
You see, her family is going through an extremely stressful time as they have suddenly found themselves out of their apartment, effective today. There is much uncertainty on where they will land in the coming days. Only God truly knows the fears and concerns this young girl is carrying inwardly. What I do know is that her cries don’t escape His ears.
Dispite being caught up in rush hour, with cars, trucks and all the disconcerting flurry of activity surrounding us, she experienced a moment of stillness and tenderness that only the true Master could provide. A moment of comfort displayed in His beauty, and touching her precious heart with His love.
It’s in moments like this that I’m reminded, “God is close to the broken hearted…”
