Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond's Historic Fan District

Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond's Historic Fan District Denominational and local ecumenical leaders have described us as a re-emerging downtown church brimming with creative energy and a heart for those in need. Yes.

Join us on Sunday to meet God in unexpected ways. Welcome to Tabernacle Baptist Church! We're excited that you would like to join us for worship. We know how daunting visiting a new church can be, so we would like to make your visit as welcoming as possible. The very latest information can be found on our website, https://tbcrichmond.org. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. If

you have anymore questions please contact [email protected]. Are you having in-person services right now? Yes, congregants and guests are simultaneously worshipping together in-person and also virtually. We'd love for you to join us at 11 AM (EST) at the corner of Grove & Meadow (RVA) or in our digital acre, livestream.com/tbcrichmond. Of course, folks are encouraged to join us asynchronously anytime. What can I expect worship at Tabernacle to be like? The best way to describe our worship here is traditionally creative or creatively traditional. We sing hymns and the doxology, we pray the Lord's prayer together, and, this summer, the sermons we hear are based on book of Acts. We strongly believe that the congregation is actively involved in worship, not a passive participant. It’s not uncommon for our congregation to take part in responsive readings and we are often led in worship by members of the congregation. It's also not uncommon for our children and teenagers to pray and read scripture, and whenever someone reads scripture or prays, we fully expect that they’ll do so in the language they use in their own home. We also actively engage in the creative installation of worship based art in our physical sanctuary. What are the people like? In a word, diverse. We are a city church, and we represent our urban location. ALL are welcome! Want to know more? Click here to explore our welcome statement . https://www.tbcrichmond.org/about/welcome-statement/

What if I'm not a Baptist? Should I still come to Tabernacle? Absolutely! People from various denominational backgrounds including Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopalian, the United Church of Christ, and non-denominational have chosen to make Tabernacle their spiritual home. If you'd like more information on what it means to be Baptist click here, but keep in mind that we welcome everyone to attend and join our church. We don't believe you have to agree about everything in order to worship God together. What if I'm liberal/conservative/etc? Should I come to Tabernacle? People at Tabernacle span the spectrum from theologically liberal and moderate to conservative. Those who are affiliated with the Democratic and Republican parties worship together on a weekly basis. We don't always agree about everything, and we don't want to. That would be boring and inconsistent with how we interpret the Jesus of the Gospels. We believe every Christian is a priest and is able to interpret scripture with God's help, and that everyone's opinion and contribution is essential and valid. Diversity makes us stronger because we have the opportunity to learn from each other. You don't have to think like everyone else does to be welcome here. That's not even possible. Tabernacle is a safe place to wrestle with important issues and express doubt.

Lead Worship With Us This Summer

We are hoping to fill out the entire summer worship schedule within the next two weeks, and we would love your help making that happen.

When staff knows in advance who is available to read scripture, pray, share a testimony, or help lead music, it opens up the planning process in ways that are hard to overstate. We get time to get ahead, to be more thoughtful about each service, and to put more into what the congregation experiences on Sunday mornings.

Sunday mornings are at their best when the people in the room are also the people up front. Signing up early helps make this possible. We hope you will find a way to lead this summer."

Help Us Cover the Summer: New Worship Sign-up Tool

Last summer, the congregation stepped up in a remarkable way to help lead worship while staff navigated a season of big transition. You covered the whole summer, and it made such a difference.

We’re hoping we can do that again this year.
When we know in advance who is available to read scripture, pray, share a testimony, help lead music, or serve in another worship role, it is a game changer for the staff. It gives us more space to develop meaningful services. It also honors one of our deepest convictions: worship is at its best when it is participatory, shared, and shaped by the gifts of the congregation..

You can sign up and see who has already offered to help at this link https://www.tbcrichmond.org/worship/help-lead-worship/

Help Lead Worship and See Who’s Already Signed Up

Worship at Tabernacle has always been at its best when many voices and gifts are part of it.

We’ve created a new Help Lead Worship page where you can let us know when you’re available to help read scripture, pray, share a testimony, help lead music, or serve in another worship role.

You can also see who has already offered to help on upcoming Sundays and check the Sundays you’ve signed up for.

You may not be asked to serve every Sunday you mark, but each Sunday you select helps us plan, so please choose the dates when you genuinely expect to be available.
Thank you for helping us keep worship leadership broad, shared, and rooted in the life of the congregation.

We’re continuing to widen the circle of worship leadership so more voices, gifts, stories, and prayers can help shape our life together. Whether you have helped lead worship before or are wondering if there might be a place for you, we would be grateful to know how and when you may be available. U...

This Sunday, May 24, is Pentecost, and we are preparing a special layered reading of Acts 2 during worship.

We are looking for people who would be willing to read Acts 2:4–13 aloud during the service. Several people will read at the same time, so it will intentionally sound a little chaotic, like many voices filling the room as we remember the Spirit’s movement at Pentecost.

We would especially love to include people who can read in languages other than English, but English readers are welcome too. You do not need perfect pronunciation. You do not need to be a professional reader. This is about faithful participation and helping the congregation experience the wonder, confusion, beauty, and wideness of Pentecost.

If you are willing or possibly willing to participate, please fill out this short form:

Join Us for the Church Picnic Today

We are confirmed for today’s church picnic at the home of Judy and Eric Fiske, Sunday, April 26, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The weather looks a little cool, so bundle up, bring a chair or blanket, and join us for a good evening together. Judy and Eric’s home features one of Richmond’s great treasures: a glorious yard, a wraparound porch that deserves its own fan club, and Judy’s numerous flower beds!

Please bring a side dish to share. Tabernacle will provide fried chicken.

Judy and Eric have asked that guests park on Cedar Lane or on their side of New Kent Road. Please do not park on the opposite side of the street from the front of their house.

Please reach out to a staff member for Judy and Eric’s home address.

Growing as Discerning People

In the book Discerning *God’s Will Together: A Spiritual Practice for the Church, the authors explain several basic assumptions underlying discernment. One is that although there is structure and a “process” to discernment, simply applying the “method” is ineffective if we are not “under the influence” of the Holy Spirit.

Another assumption is that remaining “under the influence” requires practice…..For example, hearing the Spirit speak through Scripture, listening to the Spirit through prayer, hearing the Spirit speak through others as we pray together.

So how can we support and encourage each other in the ongoing and consistent practices of listening for the Spirit?

In the coming weeks, we will be creating a dedicated “Hope Space” in our church (and outside our church) to encourage these practices as an integral part of our Building 4 Hope endeavor. Stay tuned and in the meantime, keep listening…

Where is God already at work in our community?
What is our church uniquely able to offer to make His kingdom visible and viable here?

TBC Building & Grounds Update—Gratitude for Volunteer Maintenance Work

We take every opportunity to say thank you, especially when people volunteer their time and energy to keep our buildings looking better—inside and outside! We recognize the years that Bill Gradwell put mulch down around the church each spring. A stand-in crew finished that job this year the week before Easter Sunday. Vincent Sallie and Jim and Donna Soyars put down two truck loads of mulch, making sure to clean up the sidewalks along the way. What a difference that made in preparation for our Easter weekend!

The day after Easter, Jay Hartman, Patrick Braford, Vincent Sallie, and Jim and Donna Soyars worked to complete a specific list of “fixes” around the church. It was a beautiful day to work outside! What this team did are things that you wouldn’t necessarily notice, such as:

- Re-attach Vent Screen for Kitchen Fan (Grove Avenue Outside)
- Fix Dumpster Shed Door
- Repair Drip Edge for TCCC Toy Shed
- Clean Out Closet Next to the Kitchen
- Re-secure the TCCC Entrance Awning
- Anchor Ramp Pad to the Ground at the TCCC Entrance.
- We found a few historical pieces when cleaning out one of our basement closets near the kitchen. We have treasures in our church of all types!

If you are interested in volunteering for another workday at TBC, please let us know! Contact Donna Soyars or Vincent Sallie at any time.
