Dear Ones,
What we witnessed this past weekend in Virginia has again broken our hearts. We ask how can there be so much hatred within God's people, each one marvelously made in the image of love? Some have felt empowered by hate-filled words and the lack of accountability for all people to be given the dignity that must and should be theirs. But throughout this country's history a hatred called racism has never vanished, although we have wanted to think our better selves have not participated in the oppression of people of color (or of different faiths, or of different socioeconomic backgrounds or even of gender or sexual preference.) I pray a prayer of confession that in small ways, some unintentional, some through silence, and in large ways in alliance with society, many of us failed to love God and all of our brothers and sisters through our actions and words. Forgive us, O God. And help us move forward with open eyes to what you dream for us all.
Within our beloved community we are diverse and beautiful and I hope each one of you feels deeply loved, honored and respected. Call one another out when words or actions imply anything other!
I feel particularly sad that in many local expressions of the church nothing has been or will be said. I tend to be loud and you have always supported me in my stand for peace with justice, for working for change, and for taking the risks that God calls us to as we glimpse the already but not yet kingdom. You called a woman to minister alongside you as your pastor; you were and are open and affirming; you recognized God's call on the life of one whom others would deny ordination; you never flinched or asked questions of "worth" as we gave to the ones in need because you knew there was indeed some kind of hunger. In each act of love, we grow and are transformed. And God continues to call us to such tasks of reconciliation. We will stand together. We will speak up. It will not always be easy, but it will always be right. We will work together and invite our brothers and sisters into the light of God's love. We link arm in arm to be a healing place. Grace and peace, comfort and care; courage and strength for the days ahead.
