While some parts of the Hanukkah story may be complicated, what’s clear is that we all have the capacity to increase holiness, illuminate darkness, and reveal the sparks within ourselves and others. Miracles aren’t just a thing of the past but something we can find and manifest in our everyday lives. No matter how you celebrate these eight nights, we wish you a Hanukkah filled with light, love, happiness, and hope! 💙🕎🕷️

And for all those in our extended community celebrating Christmas today and Kwanzaa this week, we wish you a merry and meaningful holiday season. May we all experience a new year filled with more joy, strength, and peace.

Jewish Life at the University of Richmond is devastated to learn about the murder of six hostages in Gaza, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin. Hersh and his family had ties to the Richmond Jewish community, and he was known by several of our students. We grieve with Hersh’s family and friends, and offer prayers of comfort and strength to the loved ones of all six hostages. We hope that all of their memories may be a source of blessing.

We also continue to pray for the safe return of the nearly 100 Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, for an end to the violence devastating the lives of Israelis and Palestinians, and for peace to emerge throughout the wider region.

UR Hillel will be hosting a space this Tuesday, September 3 at 5 p.m. for students to grieve, process, and support one another. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jewish Chaplain Josh Jeffreys or other members of the Chaplaincy. We are here for you.

עוֹשה שָׁלוֹם בִּמְרומָיו הוּא יַעֲשה שָׁלום עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשרָאֵל

May the One who makes peace on high, grant peace to us, to all Israel, and to all who mourn.

As the University’s sixth annual UR Here Giving Day kicks off, we are so grateful for the ways our Spider community comes together to support the University of Richmond and our students. Especially as we prepare for Passover and our campus Seder, we see the impact that giving has on our ability to foster a vibrant Jewish community through fun, meaningful, and joyous programs and we’re thankful for all those donors past and present who help make that work possible.

Today and tomorrow, we hope you’ll visit urhere.richmond.edu to learn more about the impact giving has on campus and the ways you can support Jewish Life, Chaplaincy, or the University as a whole.

No matter how you celebrate or spell (C)Hanu(k)ka(h), whether you join us on campus for tonight’s candle lighting or stand with us in spirit from afar, we wish all of our Spiders a Hanukkah filled with light, love, and joy!

For the next eight nights, may we all increase holiness, may we tend to our inner sparks, and may we dedicate ourselves to seeing and revealing the light in others regardless of how dark things may appear. Because miracles aren’t just an ancient thing, they continue to surround us every moment of every day. 💙🕎🕷️

A Message of Support and Solidarity Following Attacks on Israel:

We were devastated to wake up on Shabbat morning and the Shmini Atzeret/Simchat Torah holiday to the news of the horrific attacks on the Jewish homeland and the Israeli people. The news of this attack against innocent people is shocking and heartbreaking; our hearts and prayers are with all of the Israeli people and families who have been affected by this tragedy. We are thinking of our students and community members with family and friends in Israel, our alumni living there, and all those on campus who care so deeply for the safety of loved ones.

These events are difficult and the images are unsettling, and we want you to know that Jewish Life at UR, our Hillel Student Interns, and Chaplaincy staff are here for support. The Wilton Center Conference Room will be open from 3-5 p.m. today for students to stop by to debrief, talk to peers or simply be in a safe space with others experiencing similar feelings. If you need immediate support, please call or text Jewish Chaplain Josh Jeffreys, or reach out to the Chaplaincy or CAPS.

Wherever we stand on Israel, today we stand in solidarity with our siblings there in condemning the brutal Hamas attack, in offering our love and support to those who mourn, in hoping for the healing of those harmed, and praying for the safe return of those captured. Just as much, we continue to pray for peace for all of those who reside in Israel and Palestine, and those on campus and around the world who care deeply for the Land and the peoples who call it home. We hope you will join us in resisting the urge for violent or dehumanizing rhetoric, and instead choose words and actions that manifest healing, compassion and wholeness.

This is an evolving situation and as events continue to unfold, we will continue creating opportunities for understanding and education about this situation.

It is with tremendous gratitude and joy that we share “UR alums and longtime generous benefactors Carole and Marcus Weinstein will donate $3 million to the University of Richmond Chaplaincy to support Jewish life.”

The Weinsteins’ extraordinary generosity speaks to the diversity, warmth, and vibrancy of Jewish life at the University of Richmond and honors “the ways the Chaplaincy supports all students in their faith and spirituality.” This gift will strengthen our goals of enhancing Jewish community, supporting our student-centered Hillel offerings, and engaging with the campus and Richmond community. You can read more about the Weinsteins and their generous gift here: https://bit.ly/Weinstein-Gift-UR-JewishLife.

We look forward to furthering our work of building a dynamic and inclusive Jewish community at the University of Richmond, and are excited to continue partnering with Spiders across campus in that journey!
