Dear RENEW.org Network Leaders,

We've been going verse by verse through the Book of James over the past few month at Journey Christian Church. This section of chapter 5 is not an area that I necessarily would have developed a message around. But the Apostle James gives us such great wisdom in these passages that I think it's super helpful for us to talk about.

We don't follow Jesus because he makes our lives better. We follow Jesus because he's better than life!

On the night he won the mayoral election in New York City, Zohran Mamdani said:

"We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve and no concern too small for it to care about."

This is the kind of thing Christians rightly say about God.

We live in a culture of constant novelty—always seeking the next thing, the new insight, the fresh perspective. But spiritual growth often works differently. Sometimes the most powerful Bible study isn't reading something new, but reading something familiar again and again. When we camp out in a single book or passage for days or even weeks, reading it repeatedly, something remarkable happens.

On day three, we notice details we missed initially. By day fifteen, connections emerge we hadn't seen. At day twenty-five, the words have worked their way deep into our hearts, shaping how we think and live. Repetition isn't boring—it's transformative. Like water gradually wearing smooth a rough stone, repeatedly reading God's Word smooths our rough edges and shapes us into the people he's calling us to be. Consider choosing one short book of the Bible and committing to read it daily for the next month.

On Sunday, I mentioned one of my favorite theologians: Jack Cottrell. I just noticed that a couple of his books are on a HUGE Kindle sale. His systematic theology is normally $25 on Kindle, but right now you can snag it for $3.99!

At its most basic, the word “theology” means “God talk,” the Greek originally meaning “God” and meaning “word, statement, speech, discourse.” God, then, is the ultimate subject and source of theology. Included in theology is the study of the nature of God himself, Christ, and the Hol...

Imagine standing before a judge, guilty as charged, facing an impossible fine. Then the judge removes his robe, walks around the bench, and writes a check to cover everything we owe. This is grace—not mercy that overlooks our guilt, but grace that acknowledges it fully and then pays the price. Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live and died the death we deserved. On the cross, the Father saw our sin in his Son, and now he sees his Son's righteousness in us. This is the great exchange that makes Christianity unlike any other religion. We're not working our way to God; he came down to us. We don't climb a ladder of good deeds; we rest in a finished sacrifice.

If church is important enough to come to, it’s important enough to arrive early to.
