Beautiful day! 👋Last day of May! So happy you paused your scroll to check in with us as we share with you our faith! ❤️

TODAY’S WORSHIP🙌
Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic
greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the
communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize 💦❤️ in
the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses
the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us
always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate 🎉the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as
we profess the creed 📣and as we are sent into the world 🌎to bear witness to our faith.🙌

Join us Sunday May 17 as our 150th Anniversary Celebration continues with Rededication of Tower Church Bell at First English Evangelical Lutheran Church. The bell first hung at Richmond’s Engine Company NO 4 at 207 N. 3rd Street in 1858. The bell was moved to and hung at First English on May 16, 1953.

Come join us for this rededication and greet representatives of Richmond Fire Station NO 12 (Engine Station NO 4 joined Engine Company 6 in 1953 and then Engine Company 12 in 1966) and if there are no emergencies requiring their attention, they will bring a fire engine!! Tours of the engine and snacks will be available following the service.

We give thanks for the bell that calls to worship and for the first responders who protect our city, and we pray for protection of our first responders as they serve.

In a church that proclaims God’s care for people’s bodies, minds and spirits, tending to mental health is not separate from faith.

TODAY’S WORSHIP
Jesus does not abandon his followers. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus comes to abide with his disciples
of every generation. As Pentecost draws near, we are reminded that the risen Christ dwells in us as the
Spirit of truth. We receive this Spirit in baptism and pray that in our gathering around the Lord’s table
the Spirit will transform us to be the body of the risen Christ in the world.

BLESSING OF MOTHERS 🌹❤️🙏🙌
God of all creation,
pour out your blessing on all mothers
and those who provide motherly care.
You have made them in your image
and given them children to love and care for in your name.
Bless them with a heart like your heart:
loving and kind, comforting and strong,
nurturing and grace-filled.
As they participate in your ongoing creativity,
give them discernment
to help their children discover their unique gifts.
As they teach their children,
grant them wisdom to know what is truly valuable.
2
As they strive to share your unconditional love,
give them long-suffering patience and a lively sense of humor.
As they model your mercy,
help them extend the forgiveness
they themselves freely receive from you.
In all circumstances fortify their faith,
that they may love you above all. We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

FIRST READING~ Acts 17:22-31
(In Athens, Paul faces the challenge of proclaiming the gospel to Greeks who know nothing of either
Jewish or Christian tradition. He proclaims that the “unknown god” whom they worship is the true
Lord of heaven and earth who will judge the world with justice through Jesus, whom God has raised
from the dead.)

SECOND READING~ 1 Peter 3:13-22
(The author of 1 Peter encourages Christians to remain faithful even in the face of defamation and
persecution. In baptism we are made clean to act in accordance with what is right.)

GOSPEL READING~ John 14:15-21
In final words to his disciples on the night of his arrest, Jesus encourages obedience to his
commandments and speaks of the Spirit, who will be with them forever.
[Jesus said to the disciples:] 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth,
whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him because he
abides with you, and he will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see
me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my
Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those
who love me, and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal
myself to them.”

POST COMMUNION PRAYER🙏
Holy One,
through this meal you have made your home among us
and are making all things new.
Send us now to speak peace to anxious hearts,
to love our enemies,
and to bring your healing to the nations.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen.

BLESSING 🙏
God Almighty, who is the beginning and the end,
Jesus Christ, the firstborn of the dead,
and the Spirit, our advocate and peace,
☩ bless you now and forever.
Amen.

Did you miss this? Glad 😌 you found us ❤️❤️ now! An important part of our ministry includes meeting you where you are, and if it is FB then here you are! Hello lovely! 🥰

TODAY’S WORSHIP (link to live stream you can view anytime ⬇️)

You will hear with us today’s gospel begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel! Yet the
risen Christ walks with them and then opens their eyes in the breaking of the bread.

Each Sunday our hearts burn within us as the scriptures are proclaimed and Christ appears to us as bread is broken and wine is poured.

The story of Emmaus becomes the pattern of our worship each Lord’s day.

In RVA or nearby, join us in person; get information about weekday prayer and study opportunities. A congregation celebrating 150 years in the city, for good ❤️
