Jewish-American legend Maurice Sendak was born on this day in 1928. Though he lived in America, he was deeply affected by the deaths of numerous family members during the Holocaust. His scary, haunting images result from this connection.

He's most famous for "Where the Wild Things Are," one of the most popular children's books of all time

St. Paul Catholic Church family, did you know St. Ephrem is a Doctor of the Church, and yet he was never more than a simple deacon? He is called the "Harp of the Holy Spirit" because of his incredible preaching and beautiful hymns.

Who is your best friend? Aristotle notes that there are three types of friends: those of utility, pleasure, and virtue. In the Christian understanding, truly virtuous friendship continues into heaven because the two people have spurred each other on to holiness. Learn more about virtuous friends here:

The parish church of Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy is now famous for what happened there on June 6, 1944: D-Day. Private John Steele of the 82nd Airborne parachuted into town, was injured by flak, and dangled from the pinnacle of the church.

He faked being dead for two whole hours, until the Germans took him prisoner. Later, he was able to escape and rejoin his unit.

Today, these events are commemorated by the "Parachute Memorial," which still dangles from the church steeple. It's a tribute to all the soldiers who fought to liberate Europe.

As our St. Paul Catholic Church family, let's pray today for all soldiers who have died in the defense of basic freedoms.
