The Diocese of Virginia was glad to host the annual Bishops Executive Assistants Together (B+E+S+T) conference in May in Alexandria. Nearly 80 executive assistants gathered from across the U.S., Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Honduras, with all meetings held at historic Christ Church in Old Town. Twelve bishops from Province III took part, including all three of our own, and the Rev. Shirley Smith Graham served as a keynote speaker and workshop leader. We're grateful to everyone who made the week possible.

Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville just wrapped its 67th annual Hunt Country Stable Tour. Over the weekend, 1,000 visitors toured 13 farms and stables, made possible by more than 120 volunteers. Proceeds go toward Trinity's outreach program, which supports people locally, nationally, and around the world. For Trinity, the tour is really about welcome, hospitality, and witness, with the church at the heart of it all.

Recent Bishop sightings!

On June 3, Bishop Bourlakas celebrated Eucharist with the residents of Goodwin Living - Bailey’s Crossroads, an Episcopal retirement community.

On June 7, Bishop Harris worshipped with St. Paul’s Richmond. Located across from Capitol Square in downtown Richmond, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is an urban fellowship for all people, with an active congregation enriched by its history, focused on its mission of proclaiming Christ in the heart of the city.

On June 7, Bishop Bourlakas worshipped with Christ Church Lucketts. His visit included time at their strawberry festival, a community-wide event that supports their food pantry ministry!

Research and lived experience point to a clear reality: lasting faith is strongly tied to meaningful intergenerational relationships. When children, youth, and adults worship, serve, and share daily life together, those connections cultivate belonging that carries faith forward.

A key takeaway was that intergenerational ministry cannot simply be added to a calendar. It grows over time through relationships, through worshiping together and sharing life across ages.

“I want everyone to bring into this what you have and can and choose to bring, and I want you to take away from here what you need,” Stevenson said. “You have an experience of God in this place. You have an experience of God with each other. You have an experience of God and the wonderful creation around us in this place, and an experience of God in your own prayer life.

“So, if that means that you want to get up in this room right now and go back to your room and sleep for the next 48 hours, OK, that’s fine. Whatever you need.”

Assistant Bishop Mark Bourlakas, who works closely with the Office of Congregational Vitality, notes that this clarity is essential for the mission-centered Diocese of Virginia.

“The Holy Spirit of God is always active and bringing newness to the particular communities that exist around each one of our churches,” he said. “The question for us in each new moment of the forward mission of the Gospel is how are we listening and making ourselves aware of the Holy Spirit’s movement? What newness and challenge are we preparing ourselves for as we live ever more fully into our discipleship in Jesus’ name? This is the work of congregational vitality.”
