Where will they find their people?

As thousands of young adults head to college this fall, they’ll be looking for more than classrooms and campus activities. They’ll be looking for community, connection and a place where they know they belong.

For many families, pets are family. But, when finances become strained, the cost of pet food can force heartbreaking decisions.

Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Crown Point, Indiana recently received a hunger grant to help them continue operating its community pet pantry, providing dog and cat food, treats and other essentials to local residents who need a helping hand.

The pantry fills a unique gap in the community. While several food pantries serve people in the area, none provide support for families struggling to feed their pets. The ministry helps prevent families from having to surrender beloved animals or make the devastating choice to let them go because they can no longer afford their care.

Church volunteers have welcomed neighbors who arrive in tears, fearing they have no other option but to give up their pets. Through this ministry, those families can stay together with their pets. The pantry also supports local humane societies when needs arise and provides resources for foster families caring for animals in transition.
