Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Following a year of thoughtful self-examination and community dialogue, the Church of the Holy Comforter opted to set a new course for its future grounded in ministry development. Our Discernment Committee developed a parish profile reflecting this vision, met with qualified candidates, and ultimately commended their recommendation to the Vestry. The Vestry enthusiastically and unanimously affirmed the call.
The Rev. Grant Mansfield will join The Church of the Holy Comforter as Priest-in-Charge starting on Sunday, September 27. He comes home to a parish that has played a formative role in his life and vocation. Holy Comforter was Grant’s sending parish: he interned here, was nurtured in his call to ordained ministry, and was sponsored by the parish for ordination. After leaving Richmond to attend Virginia Theological Seminary, Grant served as an Assistant Rector in Northern Virginia for two years before being called as Rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Maplewood, New Jersey, a parish he has led since 2020.
Grant’s ministry is rooted in a deep belief that the church is called to be a place of belonging, spiritual curiosity, and expansive love. At St. George’s, he has focused on worship, pastoral care, spiritual formation, discernment, justice and advocacy, racial healing, and building relationships with the wider community. He is a Spiritual Companion and regularly leads retreats, workshops, and small groups focused on prayer, discernment, and navigating seasons of transition. He has also served the wider Episcopal Church as a Deputy to General Convention, on Diocesan Council and the Commission on Ministry, and through interfaith and collaborative partnerships.
Grant earned his Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, with a concentration in New Mission Practices, and holds degrees in History and Religious Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Grant sends his greetings:
Dear HoCo,
It is a tremendous joy to return to the Church of the Holy Comforter! This is both a new chapter and a homecoming, for me and my family. My husband, Dominique, and I are excited to return to Richmond, along with our two dogs, Charlie and Maddie. I am grateful to return to this community that helped shape my vocation and to begin this next chapter of ministry together. See you in September!
Peace,
Grant+
