Proverbs 30:8-9 asks the Lord to, โKeep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, โWho is the lord?โ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.โ
I like this prayer, because it is not a prayer designed to keep us comfortable. It is a prayer for God to provide, but not to the point that we forget our source of provision. If you are like me, sometimes I get frustrated with my own drawbacks? โWhy can I not be better, do better, etc?โ These drawbacks remind me that I am not my own source, but by the grace of God I am able. In other words, this keeps me humble. At the same time, there are some areas where I know that I excel at. The temptation, even in success, is to forget who the one is who gave me the ability to excel.
Jesus references this passage from Proverbs when he teaches his disciples how to pray (โGive us this day our daily breadโ). This is one of many threads connecting the Old and New Testaments, and Jesus is infinitely wise to anchor his prayer in existing scripture. Why should we pray for daily bread? To be reminded that we are sufficient, that God is our Father who gives us what we need, lest we become too proud and forget him. By asking for our daily bread, we are reminded that we stand in obedience to one who is greater than us (see the Quote Worth Quoting).
Where have you excelled to the point that you no longer depend upon God? It is time to confess to the Lord and remember that he is your provision and strength. Perhaps pray that God would not give you too much, lest you forget the Lord.
Where are you lacking? Be wary of dishonoring the name of God by trying to accomplish something in your own ability.

NTS Camp is our annual teen camp, and many students are registered and going! If you are interested in sponsoring a student to go, you can contact Pastor Ashley at [email protected] or learn more at LifeSpring.tv/nts. Statistically across the greater church, more decisions for Jesus occur at retreats and events than in any other ministry of the greater church. Sending a student to NTS Camp is a worthy investment!

Lord, our prayer echoes that of Proverbs 30:8-9. Keep falsehoods and lies from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. You are our source, and we neither disown you nor dishonor you. In Jesus name, Amen.
