at our recent gathering, we asked a simple question: what does care look like when a community is facing crisis?

so we got just a few possibilities to share and it looks like this.

neighbors checking on neighbors, places where people feel seen, spaces where difficult conversations can happen, relationships that exist before they are needed.

throughout the evening, residents, service providers, faith leaders, educators, advocates, and community members reflected on what helps communities navigate grief, isolation, violence, uncertainty, and change.

it was a reminder that communities already carry knowledge, wisdom, resources, and responsibility within them.

the WORK is creating opportunities for those things to find one another.

our conversation was about what’s possible when people choose to show up together.

in front of Dr. Claudette Black-McDaniel’s home, we asked it plainly
‘from wherever you stand, what does it mean to be civically present here?’

and what was shared with us was just as clear. THERE ISN’T ONE WAY.

it takes all of us moving in different ways, from different places, for the same community.

that’s what made that moment what it was.

planRVA. project gabriel. richmond city school board. vcu division of community engagement. and the community itself present together.

the work is recognizing that everybody has a place in what comes next.
