Devotional: Week of June 22nd, 2026
Living to Please God

In John 8:29 we find these words from the lips of Jesus: "I always do what pleases him (God, the Father)". Jesus spent His life showing us what it looked like to do those things that are pleasing to the Father. Both His attitude and His actions reflected obedience to the Father's will.

Even though we are not perfect, we can have a daily desire to do right things that would be pleasing to our heavenly Father. The Apostle Paul, in writing to the church at Thessalonica, said several things concerning this topic. It reads like this in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, verse 1: "... we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more". He first reminded them of his instruction to live in ways to please God. He then praised them for doing so. Then he pleaded with them to continue to live in ways that were pleasing to God and finally he revealed how this was even possible; it was through the presence and the power of the Lord Jesus living in and through them.

I hope your desire is to live a life pleasing to God. It all starts with choosing to become a follower of Jesus and then to allow Him to work in and through you each day.

Devotional: Week of June 15th, 2026
Shared Hope

On a recent vacation to the mountains of Virginia, there was an old cemetery close to where we were staying. I stopped by it one day looking at some of the older tomb stones checking the dates written on them. While doing so, an older gentleman stopped by wondering if I had a relative buried there and if he could be of any assistance finding their grave. I told him that I was just admiring some of the old tombstones, fulfilling my love for history. He shared with me about several of his ancestors that were buried there, which led me to sharing about where many of mine were buried in this mountain region. Our conversation ended up with our spiritual heritage and our common faith. The last words spoken from him were, "The next time I see you will most likely be in heaven, then we can talk some more."

What this man was saying to me was that because we have a common faith and a common hope then there will be a day when we will experience the fruit of both which is eternal life. Peter talks about this hope in 1 Peter 3 where he says, "According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you..."

The great news is that this hope is offered to all of us and can be ours through a personal faith in Jesus Christ.
