Dietrich Bonhoeffer found himself in a shaking moment. That now infamous period of time surrounding World War II was also an era-ending transition, a major turning point in world history. It consisted of a world war, cultural upheaval, the rise of hyper-nationalism, and a major turning point in the history of the Church. In these select moments in time, what was, gives way to what is next. Bonhoeffer declared that in these moments, “We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God.”1.4 I believe Jesus has been at work, using these days of uncertainty, to signal an important new work he has begun in his church. It is possible that a major era of the local church has come to an end, and a new one has begun. As I write in 2023, I am 70 years young. Sixty of those years have involved my commitment to living out my early faith in Jesus. Over thirty of those years have been focused on living out my commitment to the local church in America, serving in various capacities: church staff, lead pastor, missions executive focused on church renewal, writing, training, and resourcing. For the last 15 years, I have focused on coaching and resourcing risk-taking, Kingdom leaders who are called to lead the church into greater missional ministry. This last season of my journey has been marked by a time of deep restlessness, uncertainty, confusion, and even isolation. This was compounded as I witnessed all that was transpiring within the American Evangelical Church, and coached many who found themselves in the middle of it. Could it be that the church of today is not the church of tomorrow?

In the realm of faith, the unity and shared purpose among Christians can be likened to the compelling camaraderie and solidarity depicted in the renowned movie "Band of Brothers." This film, which portrays ordinary soldiers forging an unbreakable bond in the face of adversity, serves as a poignant metaphor for the Christian community. It's about being part of a 'Band of Believers,' where individuals, united by their faith in Christ, come together to achieve what seems beyond reach.

Let's explore how this concept of fellowship and communion is echoed in the New Testament, as translated in the King James Version (KJV):

Acts 2:42, 1 Cor 1:9, 2 Cor 6:14, 2 Cor 8:4, Gal 2:9, Eph 3:9, Phil 1:5, Phil 2:1, Phil 3:10, 1 John 1:3, 1 John 1:6, 1 John 1:7, 1 Cor 10:16, 2 Cor 13:14, Phlm 1:6, 2 Cor 9:13, Rom 15:26, Heb 13:16

In these scriptures, the essence of fellowship and communion is vividly portrayed. For example:

Acts 2:42 - "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."

Romans 15:26 - "For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem."

1 Corinthians 1:9 - "God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord."

2 Corinthians 6:14 - "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?"

Galatians 2:9 - "And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision."

Ephesians 3:9 - "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:"

Philippians 1:5 - "For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;"

Philemon 1:6 - "That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus."

Hebrews 13:16 - "But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased."

1 John 1:3 - "That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ."

These passages invite us to embrace the essence of fellowship and communion, much like the soldiers in "Band of Brothers" who, despite their differences, formed a resilient and supportive unit. As part of this 'Band of Believers,' we are called to foster a community that reflects the love and fellowship of Christ, showing the world that together, we can indeed accomplish extraordinary things.

A Call to Action:

Inspired by the spirit of 'Band of Brothers,' I invite you, as a reader and a member of this 'Band of Believers,' to contribute your thoughts and reflections to this write-up. Your commentary will enrich our collective understanding and deepen our sense of community. Share your perspectives and let's continue to build this extraordinary band together, united in faith and purpose.

The concept of being a "good person" in the context of Christian theology, particularly as discussed by Paul in the New Testament, is not solely equated with following the 10 COMMANDMENTS. Paul's teachings emphasize that while the commandments have moral and ethical value, being a good person is more deeply rooted in faith in Christ and living according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Paul acknowledges that the commandments provide a moral and ethical guidelines, but he also points out its limitations. The commandments can identify sin but cannot empower individuals to overcome sin. According to Paul, the commandments by itself is insufficient for transforming a person into being truly good in the spiritual sense.

Paul emphasizes that righteousness (being in right standing with God) comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not through the commandments (Romans 3:22). This righteousness is a gift from God, not something earned by adherence to the commandments.

In Paul's theology, the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the life of a believer. The Spirit guides, empowers, and transforms the believer, producing qualities known as the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities are indicative of being a "good person" in the Christian context.

Paul teaches that love is the fulfillment of the commandments (Romans 13:10). A life characterized by love for God and for others fulfills the moral and ethical essence of the commandments. This love is a result of the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life.

For Paul, ethical living is a response to God's grace, not a means to earn it. Believers are called to live ethically and morally, not to earn salvation, but as a grateful response to the salvation they have received through faith in Christ.

In summary, in Paul's view, being a good person is more about living a life transformed by faith in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit than strictly adhering to the commandments. While the commandments provide important moral guidance, true goodness, in the Christian sense, involves a heart and life transformed by faith and characterized by love, which is the essence of the commandments.
