The reason we can stand up and say we believe our bodies will be raised is not that we are optimists. It is not that we are afraid to look at the facts. It is that one specific tomb, outside one specific city, on one specific morning, was found empty. We do not believe in resurrection in general. We believe in him. Paul calls Jesus the firstfruits. He is the first body up out of the ground. He is the proof, and he is the promise, of all the rest. He is the first one through the door. And because he made it through, everyone holding on to him will make it through too.

The God who made your body came and got a body. He lived in it. He was tempted in it. He was beaten in it. And he died in it. He took into his own body the sin that put death in this world, the very sin that Paul says is the sting of death. And then, on the third day, he rose, body and all, and death lost its sting forever. He did not stay a spirit. He kept his scars. He turned them into gold. And he did every bit of it so that your body, that very body, in
that very seat, could one day be raised together with him.

Prayer of Confession: Father, in Christ you keep no record against us, and yet we so often keep records against one another. We have held on to debts we had no right to collect, and we have hidden the debts we owe you. Forgive us.
Lord Jesus, you carried the cost of our sin to the cross and erased the certificate that stood against us. We confess that we so often live as though we still have to pay our own way, trusting our performance instead of your finished work. Thank you for paying in full what we never could.
Holy Spirit, we cannot forgive others in our own strength, and we cannot rest in our forgiveness without your help. Pour the love of God into our hearts again, and make us a forgiven people who freely forgive. Amen.
