In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan, Fo Guang Shan Dallas Temple held the tenth session of its “60 Years of Passing the Lamp • Honoring a 100-Year Legacy” lecture series on June 7, featuring BLIA Dallas Senior Advisor Charlie Chen as keynote speaker. The lecture, titled “Awareness and Awakening — How to See Your True Self,” attracted approximately 45 devotees and community members for a meaningful journey of self-reflection and inner exploration.
Drawing from years of personal cultivation and life practice, Chen shared Buddhist perspectives on how self-awareness and inward observation can help people navigate emotional stress, interpersonal challenges, and questions of self-worth in modern life, while cultivating positive energy, blessings, and wisdom.
During the lecture, Chen guided participants to observe changes in body and mind through the Six Sense Faculties, practicing mindfulness and returning attention to the present moment. He explained that awareness is the ability to recognize one’s internal state and external conditions, while awakening arises through deeper insight and reflection. According to Buddhist cultivation, one progresses from awareness, to awakening, to enlightenment, and ultimately to realization of the Way—living in harmony with truth and developing a life of wisdom and inner freedom.
Chen also shared the story of “The Bird of the Soul,” reminding participants that in pursuing achievement and keeping pace with busy lives, people often overlook their inner needs. Only by listening to the voice within can one rediscover true strength and genuine happiness. He emphasized that happiness is not something acquired externally, but arises from harmony and balance of body, mind, and spirit.
The program also included musical reflections featuring “Song of the Soul,” composed by his Dharma companion and BLIA advisor Pauline with lyrics written by Chen, as well as “One Heart at a Time” and “Grateful for You.” Through music and lyrics, participants were encouraged to quiet the mind, appreciate the present moment, and continue their inward journey.
In closing remarks, Venerable Hui Ren, Superintendent of Fo Guang Shan Dallas Temple, shared that awareness is the starting point of cultivation, awakening is recognizing one’s true self, and enlightenment is the unfolding of life’s wisdom. When people endlessly chase external pursuits, they risk losing direction; only by returning inward and engaging in daily self-reflection can they reconnect with their authentic nature.
Venerable Hui Ren encouraged everyone to face life with compassion and aspiration, practice the Dharma in daily living, and progress from awareness toward awakening, cultivating a life fulfilled with wisdom and blessings.
The lecture concluded in an atmosphere of sincere dialogue and deep reflection. Participants shared that the experience not only helped them better understand themselves, but also deepened their appreciation for Humanistic Buddhism’s emphasis on life education and spiritual growth, bringing peace and clarity into their busy lives.
