The Blue Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship welcomes Rev. Dan Frye once again, to conduct our Sunday service on June 14th via Zoom. Addressing "Juneteenth", he declares that the “Juneteenth reflection explores the long and painful journey from slavery towards freedom, while inviting us to consider what true liberation, dignity, and justice continue to require of us today.

"Together, we will remember a pivotal moment in American history, honor the resilience of those who endured oppression, and reflect upon our continuing moral and spiritual responsibility to widen the circle of human belonging.” All are invited to take part in his reflection and discussion period following.

Blue Hills UU is an inclusive fellowship, where all are welcome at services each Sunday at 10 a.m. 230 W. Messenger St. in Rice Lake and also on Zoom – the link may be requested from [email protected].

Rev Jo Green will be welcomed back to the Blue Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship the first Sunday of June, to contemplate with the congregation our “Interdependence with Prayer and Connection.” Rev Green introduces the topic with her observation: “We never know from one day to the next what our world is going to be like; if tragedy occurs, we always hear someone say they’re sending their thoughts and prayers. What is it they think is helpful in this comment - and is it?”

Do Unitarian Universalists practice prayer? On Sunday, June 7th there will be opportunity to explore the different ways we as individuals may affect our world, how what we do can make it better, and how we may thrive in doing so.

All are welcome at Blue Hills UU services 10 a.m. Sunday mornings, 230 W. Messenger St. in Rice Lake and also on Zoom – the link may be requested from [email protected].

One of our favorite traditions at Blue Hills UU, is to gather outdoors for a picnic the last weekend in May. Our chosen setting is Veteran's Park in Rice Lake, at the covered pavilion, top of the hill. The directions are simple: coming in from the north, turn left off 48 onto Lakeshore Dr., and travel it until reaching the park, on the lake between Stout & Douglas Streets.

If you take this route, you will pass by Indian Mounds Burial Grounds, also the statuary tribute to "First People Trails," and "Manoomin", honoring both the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and the rice of Rice Lake, no longer present.

11:00 a.m., Sunday May 31st ~ bring a dish to share, and let's all welcome fairer weather into our lives once again.

Being centered in the northern tier of our most beautiful state of Wisconsin, we value its natural beauty, and honor the history of this area. But what do we really know of its past? Enlightenment can often be painful, as Blue Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship member Jude Genereaux will attest. “Having lived in this most treasured area most of my life, plus being a history buff as well” she notes “I was deeply moved to learn historical facts I’d never seen or heard referred to in all my years here.”

In honoring our UU goal of “a free and responsible search for truth,” Jude takes a step in this direction by sharing with the fellowship a number of moving, and difficult discoveries at Sunday’s service, May 24th. Be with us as she reports on her enlightening experience reading the text by Erik M. Redix “The Murder of Joe White.” Joe’s actual name: Chief Giishkitawag of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe.

Rev Jo Greene will zoom in to be with us this coming Sunday at Blue Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, to inquire “What Fills You Up?” in times of need. She observed that we’ve found many types of actions to fill times of anxiety or angst, or when we feel as if we are running on empty. Some go shopping, others turn to overeating or spending hours on line – but have we found these actions have actually helped us? What might we replace them with?

Are there healthier behaviors we could adopt to strengthen ourselves when we feel the need to fill an emptiness within? Sunday morning, let us explore ways to fill the darkness using tools that enrich our lives. There really is a way.

Former Chief of the LCO Band of Lake Superior Ojibway, Dr. Rick StGermaine will lead the service at Blue Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Sunday morning April 26th. As we relish the arrival of
mellower weather in the recent arrival of the spring equinox, as well as Earth Day celebrations, StGermaine will share with us some of the rituals and music the tribes continue to share.

StGermaine relates that "Most tribes have celebrations for the changing of the seasons, that carry on traditional ceremonies and fabulous music, adding that “both soil-based and hunting-gathering tribes recognize the seasonal changes." All are invited to be with us as we learn more about our fellow citizens, as well as our own local history.

Are all religions able to maintain a sense of humor? To take time out and have a laugh at themselves? Unitarians do. Our traveling Pastor Dennis Peters says it’s been far too long since he subjected us to some “truly terrible jokes, puns, and shaggy dog stories” based in our common religious elements. So it’s time! He urges us to “Show up! Bring your own humor with you, as well as your sense of humor! (You DO have some left, don’t you? in spite of the world around us!?).”

Each third Sunday of the month, Blue Hills Unitarians host a pot luck after the service, urging members & guests to stay awhile -bring a dish to pass and enjoy time for camaraderie & nourishment.

The Blue Hills Unitarian Fellowship will honor “Earth Day” on April 12th
by highlighting the importance of Wisconsin’s wetlands. Barron County native Tom Nedland, a DNR wetlands scientist, will share a presentation at the Sunday service, giving an overview of federal and Wisconsin state laws that apply to our wetlands.

Nedland introduces the topic by asking “Just what are wetlands and why are they so important ecologically?” His focus will be on the laws that apply along with pertinent information found in both the “Clean Water Act” and current policies affecting wetland health in Wisconsin.

Rev Daniel Frye will address the Blue Hills Unitarians this Easter Sunday, March 5th, urging that we “Embrace Possibility: Finding Spiritual Treasures in the Coming of Spring.”

With the arrival of Spring and the coming of Easter, Rev Frye invites all to celebrate the emergence of our Earth’s natural gifts, expressing that “We use this Holy Hour to reflect and be inspired by the spiritual prospect of possibility. How do we maximize and capture the possible? How do we show gratitude for potential. How do we refresh our spiritual commitments and discipline during this season of renewal? Let’s explore and worship together.”

Daniel Frye is a Unitarian Universalist minister, formerly an attorney working as a social justice lawyer representing marginalized voices and championing civil rights and governmental program benefit entitlements for people with disabilities.
