Dayana gave some brief notes from Ward Council:
-We want all of us to be having missionary experiences and have seen success when we take online efforts to share what we love about the gospel seriously
-We want our RS to be able to grow closer beyond apartment units, and to unify our RS by getting to know and be friends with others we may not be as familiar with

Sister McMullin, Stake RS President, was visiting and shared some thoughts:
She has been counseled by President Reed to share messages with the sisters when possible. Sister McMullin brought up the recent changes in conference and referenced the scripture phrase “the traditions of our fathers.” She suggested that since we have more time on Sundays we consider what changes we will make in our own lives and what habits we will form now to show that we value that revelation and are willing to take that sacred time we have been given seriously. Instead of waiting for January to start putting in place methods of keeping the Sabbath day more holy, start now. Embrace this opportunity to make the gospel a “bigger and better part of your life.”

“Women and Gospel Teaching in the Home”
Taught by: Rachel Richardson

Rachel mentioned that this talk is centered around service and love, and that perhaps we keep getting these talks because it is something that we still haven’t quite taken completely to heart.

Why does the Lord give women the responsibility to nurture?
“While I do not know all the Lord’s reasons for giving primary responsibility for nurturing in the family to faithful sisters, I believe it has to do with your capacity to love. It takes great love to feel the needs of someone else more than your own. That is the pure love of Christ for the person you nurture. That feeling of charity comes from the person chosen to be the nurturer having qualified for the effects of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The motto of the Relief Society, which my own mother exemplified, seems to me inspired: “Charity Never Faileth.”

As daughters of God, you have an innate and great capacity to sense the needs of others and to love. That, in turn, makes you more susceptible to the whisperings of the Spirit. The Spirit can then guide what you think, what you say, and what you do to nurture people so the Lord may pour knowledge, truth, and courage upon them.”

In groups we discussed key ideas to preparing ourselves to love and nurture:

Prayer:
-we are here on Earth and given a part of Heavenly Father’s work, so we should seek his help.
-with His help we can know how to best serve to their individual needs. The Lord knows his people and can guide you to helping them in their circumstances.
Scripture:
-we can use the Savior’s life as well as his disciples and prophets as an example and a model for us.
-Christ experienced all things from betrayal, heartbreak, trials, family relationships, love. He truly knows what we are going through and you can find the connections to your own life if you seek for them.
Pondering:
-shows Heavenly Father you are ready and prepared to commit to doing what He may put in your path to accomplish.
-allows you to be in a place that you can receive revelation
-allows the Spirit to inspire
Temple:
“Brothers and sisters, I pray that each of us will honor the Savior and make any necessary changes to see ourselves in His sacred temples. In doing so, we can accomplish His holy purposes and prepare ourselves and our families for all the blessings the Lord and His Church can bestow in this life and eternity.” -Elder Cook
“As we attend the temple, there can come to us a dimension of spirituality and a feeling of peace which will transcend any other feeling which could come into the human heart. We will grasp the true meaning of the words of the Savior when He said: ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. … Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.’” -President Monson
Be Worthy to Understand and Follow the Spirit:
-can offer guidance and direction

What type of life are you preparing for your future family?

Rachel shared a personal story in which two close friends of hers were able to nurture her by daily, continual efforts of consistently being there for her, serving and showing love for her.

As we prepare ourselves to love and nurture others and keep our focus on the Savior, experiences to serve will come.

Dayana gave a wonderful lesson on the importance of personal and family scripture study.

We started by having a few sisters share personal experiences of ways that they have made scripture study effective for themselves or a time when scriptures were helpful to them.

Some shared that they were able to gain more from their reading when they took the time to use the footnotes and index. Others found ways to learn from the scriptures by applying different verses to their own lives and individual situations, or by taking notes and listening to the Spirit that comes when you show you are prepared and putting in the effort to receive inspiration.

The Lord will magnify what you could learn if you put in the effort.

Dayana shared a metaphor from her mission that when you study the scriptures and live actively in righteousness it’s like you are filling an invisible box with your testimony. You never know which part of your testimony you will be called on in a moment to share with another. The best practice is to always be adding to it.

Dayana presented a short video about getting into a habit of reading the scriptures daily. When we keep trying to increase the quality of our time spent studying the scriptures we will be blessed for our sincere efforts, not only for our successes.

All of the sisters were invited to look up the following scriptures and read them for themselves during the lesson:
2 Timothy 3:15-17
1 Nephi 15:23-25
2 Nephi 32:3
Doctrine and Covenants 11:22-23

A sister shared a quote from Elder Richard G. Scott’s October 2014 talk, “Make the Exercise of Faith Your First Priority”:

“Don’t yield to Satan’s lie that you don’t have time to study the scriptures. Choose to take time to study them. Feasting on the word of God each day is more important than sleep, school, work, television shows, video games, or social media. You may need to reorganize your priorities to provide time for the study of the word of God. If so, do it!”

Dayana shared that the scriptures are a wonderful resource for ourselves when we may need comfort, peace, inspiration, or someone to be there for us. In our future families the scriptures will invite the Spirit and bring strength to the home.

The lesson was finished with an invitation to help us improve our own scripture study. Using different colors, mark the following as you read the scriptures:
-Christ’s name
-attributes of Christ (faith, charity)
-doctrines of Christ (Christ’s teachings)
-Christ’s voice

Also:
-mentions of the scattering and gathering of Israel
-mentions of ministering, ways we serve and relate to others

Chyna gave a beautiful lesson on the October 2018 General Conference talk “Lift Up Your Head And Rejoice” by M. Joseph Brough. We discussed some examples of difficult challenges that we may face, and ways that we can serve others to help counteract or at least alleviate some of these struggles.

Examples of Challenges:
-stress, illness
-homesickness
-mental isolation, trying to find your place
-loss, family difficulties
-anxiety

Ways We Can Serve:
-love
-consistency
-sincerely listen
-pray for others
-be prepared to act
-learn to be in tune with the Spirit

It was mentioned that the sometimes the most helpful thing is to just be someone to listen to what the other individual may be going through, rather than providing a solution every time. Several sisters shared personal stories relating that when they or others had kept themselves in tune with the spirit, and paid close attention along the way they were able to reach out and notice when a time of need arrived.
We discussed that there are different ways in which we may feel the Spirit. Some may experience a thought coming to mind, some may feel physical sensations such as warmth or goosebumps, others through other people. Other sisters shared ideas similar to that articulated by Camilla E. Kimball, to “Never suppress a generous thought.”

We wrapped up the lesson with going back to the idea of what we can do to serve others and help them on their way as well along the path of life. Some suggestions of ways to help others include: encourage them to seek outside help such as a blessing, or a counselor, or someone with experience pertaining to their individual trials. It is helpful when ministering to come with a plan or goals in mind. One of the most valuable things is to be there for people so that they don’t feel like they are alone. Sometimes the littlest things like a spiritual thought or even just a text message specific to that individual can mean the world.

Invitation from the Quorum of the 12:

Bishop d’Evegnee shared the painting, “The Gleaners”, in reference to the Old Testament practice of allowing those in need to follow after the harvesters and gather up leftover grain for their own. This principle is described in detail in Deuteronomy 24:19-22. Farmers would harvest their crops once, leaving off the corners of their fields and leaving anything that fell to the ground, or that they had forgotten to gather, behind for others. They took of the harvest the majority for themselves what they had been blessed with, but also in return gave back to others.
It was mentioned that this principle is similar to that of our fast offerings, for the Lord to take care of all of His people. Bishop d’Evegnee shared the idea, “We honor the giver when we extend that gift to others.” We discussed the importance of cultivating an attitude of wanting to share what we’ve been given, and that in return for being obedient to this commandment we are blessed again, in an eternal round.
What do we do with the truth that we have been blessed with harvesting throughout our lives? We have to be able to expand that harvest to others.
“Your ability to have something is dependent on your ability to share it.”
Bishop d’Evegnee shared that when his son left for Africa on his mission, he was impressed while comforting his other children that “we can’t keep what we have unless we are willing to share it,” and that he knew that his son was exactly where he was supposed to be.

We have had extended by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles four invitations to put into preliminary practice and emphasis in Idaho. These are:
Sacrament and Sabbath Day Observance- be prepared each Sunday, and in partaking of the Sacrament each week we have our own opportunity to do as it says in verse 22 and remember our own previous “bo***ge” before we were freed through repentance and knowledge of the Restored Gospel.
Indexing Goals- Every Tuesday at 7pm in STC room 252 our ward has planned to meet to work on indexing and prepare others to receive ordinances, thus allowing those on the other side of the veil to glean from our righteous efforts.
Temple and FHE Goals- find an ancestor who needs their ordinances completed and then es**rt them to the temple, possibly serve as a proxy for them, so they can receive what they couldn’t in this life.
Missionary Work- details below

In his 1974 address, “When Will the World be Converted”, President Kimball stated:
“ I believe that the Lord is anxious to put into our hands inventions of which we laymen have hardly had a glimpse. The Prophet Joseph Smith declared: ‘The truth of God will go forth boldly, till it has penetrated every continent, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished.’ A significant revelation states: ‘For, verily, the sound must go forth from this place into all the world, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth—the gospel must be preached unto every creature. …’ (D&C 58:64.)”

“Invitation to do Online Missionary Work:

Each ward member pray to find a friend or family member they can invite to hear the message of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ through social media.
Ward member asks friend or family member to read a selected topic from Mormon.org (or whatever you think is appropriate, Joseph’s First Vision, etc.) and have a discussion via skype or facetime about what they’ve read with you.
After two of these prep lessons, the member asks the investigator if the full-time missionaries where they live could come and teach them.
Report.”

Bishop d’Evegnee suggested we watch who “likes” what posts and look for patterns. He shared a story of one member who found success in this way, by recognizing that one individual “liked” all of his gospel related posts on social media and reached out to ask if she would like to learn more. The missionaries met with her and he was able to call in to the discussions and she was eventually baptized.

In the past 2 years there have been 130 baptisms from these efforts.
The things we may post can be simple, just something uplifting like a quote or something that touched us that day, that you can share with someone else.
“The best way to be within His reach is to help His reach extend to the lives of others.”
“If you want His help, look to help someone else.”

Doctrine and Covenants 58:27-28: “Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness; 28. For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.”

Isaiah 61:1 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound…”

In summary, free yourself of your own bo***ge then with the Savior’s help free others through indexing, temple, and online missionary work efforts. As we share the harvest of truth that we have been blessed with, we not only bless others but ourselves as well for our obedience.

We had a wonderful activity this afternoon as we gathered on the temple grounds together. Marisol prepared a beautiful mini lesson for us as a reminder that the temple should always be the focus and ultimate goal of our lives, and shared a talk by President Monson entitled “The Holy Temple- A Beacon to the World”. President Monson said, “The world can be a challenging and difficult place in which to live. We are often surrounded by that which would drag us down. As you and I go to the holy houses of God, as we remember the covenants we make within, we will be more able to bear every trial and to overcome each temptation. In this sacred sanctuary we will find peace; we will be renewed and fortified.” The temple grounds are a beautiful place to find peace and to listen to the Spirit, and we would encourage everyone to go often.
