We’re so glad you’ve joined us online for worship this morning! Whether you’re watching from home, traveling, or joining us for the first time, we’re grateful you’re here. Grab your coffee, settle in, and get ready to worship together!

Today we begin a new sermon series: “A Loving Church: Growing the Heart of Republic.” ❤️ As we look at what it means to be a church that loves God, loves people, and loves our community, we start at the only place that truly makes sense—Jesus.

Today’s message is “Everything Begins with Jesus.” Before we can grow as individuals, as a church, or as a community, we have to keep Jesus at the center. He is where our faith begins, where our love begins, and where our mission begins.

Pursue Hospitality
Scripture: Romans 12:13
“Contribute to the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality to strangers.”

Reflection
Paul doesn't say, “Wait for hospitality to happen.”
He says pursue hospitality.
Go looking for opportunities to welcome people. Look for the person standing alone. Notice the person who doesn't seem to fit in. Make room at the table. Start the conversation. Invite someone in.
Hospitality was at the heart of Jesus' ministry. Jesus ate with people others avoided. He touched people others wouldn't touch. He welcomed people others pushed away.
Hospitality isn't just about having someone over for dinner. It is about communicating:
“You matter. You belong. There is room for you here.”
In a divided and lonely world, hospitality can become one of the most powerful expressions of our faith.

Questions
Who might feel like an outsider in your community, workplace, neighborhood, or church?
What makes someone feel genuinely welcomed?
Who could you intentionally invite, include, or encourage this week?

Practice
Look for someone who might otherwise be overlooked and intentionally welcome them.

Prayer:
Jesus, give me eyes to see the people others overlook. Help me create room for people to experience Your love and belonging. Amen.

As Far as It Depends on You
Scripture: Romans 12:18
“If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

Reflection
I love the honesty in Paul's words: “If it is possible, so far as it depends on you…”
Paul understands something we sometimes forget: we cannot control other people.

You can apologize, and someone may still refuse to forgive you.
You can try to make peace, and someone may still choose conflict.
You can speak kindly, and someone may still respond harshly.
You can do the right thing, and someone may still misunderstand your motives.

Peace is a two-way street, and sometimes the other person refuses to walk it.
That's why Paul's words are so important: “as far as it depends on you.”

Do your part. You can't control their part That can be incredibly freeing. Sometimes we carry the responsibility for things that aren't ours to carry. We spend hours wondering what we could have said differently, what we should have done differently, or how we could make someone else change.

As far as it depends on you, forgive.
As far as it depends on you, speak the truth with love.
As far as it depends on you, apologize when you're wrong.
As far as it depends on you, refuse to retaliate.
As far as it depends on you, keep your heart free from bitterness.
As far as it depends on you, do good.

And then?

Leave the rest in God's hands.

Questions
Is there a situation where you are trying to control something that is actually outside your control?
What does “as far as it depends on you” mean in a difficult relationship you're experiencing?
Is there something you need to apologize for, forgive, or make right?
What is your part, and what do you need to release to God?
How might your life feel different if you stopped trying to control the outcome and simply focused on being faithful?

Prayer
Lord, help me to do what is mine to do and release what belongs in Your hands. Give me courage to make peace, humility to admit when I'm wrong, grace to forgive, and wisdom to know when I need to step back. When I cannot control the outcome, help me trust You with it. May I be faithful “as far as it depends on me” and then leave the rest to You. Amen.

God Uses the Little Things
Scripture: Romans 12:11
“Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.”

Reflection
Sometimes we think we need to do something big for God.
We imagine that faithfulness requires something spectacular. But Paul's instructions are remarkably ordinary:
Share.
Pray.
Welcome.
Serve.
Listen.
Encourage.
Feed people.
Be patient.
Show kindness.
None of those things seem particularly dramatic.

But God has always used ordinary people doing ordinary things to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
A meal can become an expression of God's love.
A conversation can change someone's life.
A prayer can give someone hope.
A welcome can become someone's first experience of belonging.
A phone call can remind someone they haven't been forgotten.
Never underestimate what God can do with something small that is given in love.
You may never see the results of your faithfulness. That's okay. Our job isn't to know what God will do with it. Our job is simply to be faithful with what God puts in front of us.

Questions
What “little thing” might God be asking you to do today?
Have you ever seen God use something small to make a big difference?
Do you sometimes underestimate the importance of your everyday acts of faithfulness?

Practice
Do one small thing today simply because you believe God can use it.

Prayer:
God, remind me that nothing done in love is insignificant. Take my ordinary acts of faithfulness and use them for Your extraordinary purposes. Amen.

Let Love Be Genuine
Scripture: Romans 12:9
“Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good.”

Reflection
Paul begins his how-to guide for faith with something deceptively simple: love.
But Paul doesn't tell us simply to say we love. He tells us to let our love be genuine. Real. Authentic. The kind of love that isn't dependent on whether someone agrees with us, likes us, or treats us the way we think they should.
It's easy to talk about love. It's much harder to live it.

Jesus calls us to become people whose lives reflect His love—not just people who know the right words. Genuine love means choosing kindness when we could choose criticism. It means offering grace when we would rather keep score. It means seeing people as people rather than as problems.
Unshakable faith begins with a heart that is becoming more like Jesus.

Questions
What does genuine Christian love look like in your life right now?
Is there a difference between the way you talk about love and the way you practice love?
Who is someone you could intentionally show genuine love to today?

Practice
Do one loving thing today that requires nothing in return.

Prayer:
Jesus, make my love genuine. Help me not simply to talk about Your love but to live it. Shape my heart so that people encounter You through the way I treat them. Amen.

Don't Let Evil Change Who You Become
Scripture: Romans 12:17–18
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil… If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

Reflection
One of the hardest things about being hurt is resisting the temptation to hurt back.
Someone says something cruel, and we want to say something crueler. Someone excludes us, and we want to exclude them. Someone gossips about us, and suddenly we want everyone to know what they have done.
But Paul gives us a different way.

Don't let someone else's behavior determine who you become.
You may not be able to control what someone does to you. You can't control their words, their choices, or their attitude. But you can decide what their behavior will produce in you.

You don't have to become bitter because someone else is bitter.
You don't have to become cruel because someone else is cruel.
You don't have to become hateful because someone else hates you.
You belong to Christ. Christ gets to determine who you become.

Questions
Has someone's behavior ever changed the way you behaved?
Is there a situation where you need to stop reacting and start responding like Jesus?
What would it look like for you to choose peace today?

Practice
Before responding to something difficult today, pause and pray:
“Jesus, don't let their behavior determine my behavior.”

Prayer:
Lord, when I am hurt, help me respond rather than react. Keep my heart from becoming bitter. Give me the strength to choose Your way instead of the world's way. Amen.

God Is Working When We Can't See It
Scripture: Exodus 2:5–10
Pharaoh thought he was controlling the future.
But God was already writing a bigger story.
The very child Pharaoh wanted destroyed was rescued by Pharaoh's own daughter. Moses ended up being raised inside the household of the very empire that wanted to destroy him.
What a reminder that God can work in ways we could never anticipate.
There will be seasons when we don't see what God is doing. We may wonder why prayers seem unanswered. We may wonder why circumstances haven't changed.
But God's silence doesn't necessarily mean God's absence.
Sometimes God is working beneath the surface.
Before Moses stood before Pharaoh, God was already preparing him.
Before the Red Sea parted, God was already at work.
Before Israel experienced freedom, God was already putting the pieces together.

Reflection Question:
Can you think of a time when you later realized God had been working even though you couldn't see it at the time?

Prayer:
God, when I cannot see what You are doing, help me trust that You are still working. Give me patience to wait and faith to believe that Your story is bigger than what I can see. Amen.

Do What You Can, Then Trust God
Scripture: Exodus 2:1–3

Jochebed did everything she could to protect her son.
She hid him. She cared for him. She protected him as long as she could.
But eventually she reached the point where she could no longer control what happened next. So she placed Moses in a basket and released him into the Nile.
What a picture of faith.
She did what she could—and then she trusted God with what she couldn't.
There are moments in life when we reach the limits of our control. We've prayed. We've worked. We've tried to fix things. We've had the conversations. We've done everything we know to do.
And then comes the hardest part:
letting go.
Letting go isn't giving up. Sometimes letting go is an act of faith.

Reflection Question:
What are you trying to control that you need to place into God's hands?
Prayer:
God, help me do everything I can do and then trust You with everything I cannot control. Give me the faith to release what I cannot carry. Amen.
