Today we celebrate International Archives Day, created in 1948 by the International Council on Archives with support from UNESCO. It’s a day intended to highlight the importance of preserving historical records with care and commitment, and observe the importance of access for future generations.

This is a terrific opportunity to celebrate the excellent, consistent, and creative Providence Archives team. The small but mighty group reliably sets a high standard for archiving and preserving the rich history of both the Sisters of Providence and Providence Health & Services. The Providence Archive team includes: Peter Schmid (Manager), Arabella Matthews (Senior Archivist), Brian Drischell (Visual Resources Archivist), Jessica Long (Artifact Collections Curator), and Pam Hedquist (Assistant Archivist-Technical).

Check out the team's newsletter, "Past Foward," here: https://www.providence.org/about/providence-archives/past-forward-newsletter

Thank you all for the passion and excellence you each devote to the community!

This month, a book that details the journey of the Sisters of Providence westward to the Pacific Northwest is featured in a daily online reading series led by Rev. Eric Andersen (of Saint Steven Catholic Church in Portland).

"The Bell and the River" was first published in 1957, and is the result of extensive research by Sr. Mary of the Blessed Sacrament (McCrosson).

Rev. Eric reads a chapter a day, beginning in reflection to the Novena of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and running through much of June.

On this day, 45 years ago: The Cause of Emilie Tavernier Gamelin was officially introduced at her parish church, the Notre-Dame Basilica, in the Archdiocese of Montreal.

The Sisters of Providence foundress was presented by Pope John Paul II as blessed in 2001, and the cause for her canonization to be named a Saint in the Roman Catholic Church continues today. The Sisters operate a dedicated office that is devoted to Blessed Emilie's cause at the community's International Centre in Montreal.

God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your daughters and sons.
Keep in your mercy those women and men
who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely
into your kingdom of justice and peace.

We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

This week, the California Angels (southern California) region of Providence Associates and Companions gathered at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

Nicolas Estrada, PA – associate university minister for liturgy at University of San Diego – gave the primary address at the meeting, outlining the relationship of the Sisters and Associates. Providence Associates Executive Director Kathe Boucha, PA, and Secretary Margaret Bauer, PA, traveled from Alaska to contribute to the summit.

Providence Associates are compassionate laypeople who desire to share the mission and spirituality of Providence. They are drawn by the same spirit and charism as the Sisters of Providence, and serve from 19 U.S. states. Internationally, Associates are also located in three districts throughout the Philippines, along with an active member in Tanzania.

Srs. Rosa Sen Nguyen, SP, and Teresa White, SP, were also in attendance at the Burbank gathering.

May the God who created a world of diversity and vibrancy,
Go with us as we embrace life in all its fullness.

May the Son who teaches us to care for strangers and foreigners,
Go with us as we try to be good neighbors in our communities.

May the Holy Spirit who breaks down our barriers and celebrates community,
Go with us as we find the courage to create a place of welcome for all.

Amen.
