*TOTEM TUESDAY*
Whole books can be, and have been, written on COYOTE. He is one of the big wigs of the totem world. But in typical Coyote form, this fame will quickly go to his head and be his undoing. As he parades around, snoot in the air, he will most likely trip on his own tail. This is COYOTE medicine.
He is the TRICKSTER whose popularity reaches from ancient times into the modern world, because he is the sacred clown. He makes us laugh, usually at ourselves. Think Wile E Coyote. He is very clever and sly, but this works against him when he over-complicates things to get to his goals, or mistakes short-sightedness for cleverness.
His message, in one form or another is to laugh. Simplify. Lighten up. He teaches by demonstrating what NOT to do. And he teaches that everything is sacred and nothing is sacred. Life is truly a huge cosmic joke, and if you're not in on it, Coyote may come nipping at your heals, to trip you up so you can remember who you are -- Divine AND human. If you think the Spiritual is no laughing matter, you are blowing on the dog whistle that will bring Coyote running.
He is not a mean-spirited trickster, but is running circles around you calling out, "Come on! Let's play!" A lot of people pray to God when their cages get rattled, not realizing that it's God who is doing the rattling. It's a wake up call, not to get more serious and keep pushing through the tough times, but to look again at the dragons we've been fighting to see that they actually are windmills, and laugh at the audacity of what we once believed. We are living a dream within a dream, and when you realize this then there is nothing left to do but laugh.
It's time to leave your swords and lances in the grass and run off to play. Life is not a battle. Life is a dance.
