RP:
We are lamenting and grieving the murder of George Floyd. Our hearts are heavy that the black community continues to face a long standing history of racism and trauma. .
The journey towards racial justice is a marathon, not a sprint. Our POC brothers and sisters know this first hand. Often times the first question people (usually white people) ask when confronted with racism and systemic injustice is “what do I do now?” There is nothing inherently wrong with this question, but we want to challenge you to first ask yourself a few of these questions: “Do I see?” “Do I see prejudice in my own heart?”
“Do I see my privilege?”
“Do I really see all people as image bearers of God?” Jesus saw people. Saw the marginalized. Saw the oppression. Saw the hurt, grief, pain. Do I? .
Taking time to process the deeper heart questions paves the way for the journey to continue on instead of coming to a grinding halt when things get hard or uncomfortable. As we stand up, we must do the heart work of addressing what is within us and bringing those things before the Jesus. .
Here are some next steps we would encourage you to consider:
1. Spend time doing the ongoing heart work of personal confession, repentance and lamenting (see second slide for a few questions to consider)
2. Picking one resource (movie, book or podcast) to focus on, instead of choosing nothing because you are overwhelmed. (See third slide)
3. Spend time studying the Bible and building a solid theological understanding that racial justice is not simply a social issue. It is an integral part of the Kingdom of God that Jesus call us to.
