ADVENT DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT~
Adam and Eve learned that a son would be born who would crush the serpent (Satan who came to tempt the woman). And now Adam and Eve had two sons. Could one of these be the promised victor who would slay the serpent?
When the two sons brought their sacrifices to God, Abel brought an offering from his flock while Cain an offering from his fields. God looked at Abel's offering favorably but not so at Cain's. It had more to do than what the offering was about. It was what was in each man's heart as they worshiped God and brought Him their very best. Most likely, Cain had sin in his heart and God saw that his gift was given in an obligatory manner rather than from true worship in his heart.
Cain, in his jealousy, slayed his brother Abel after having words with each other. The righteous son had been overcome by the wicked one.
From that point, wickedness needed a reckoning, and the God of justice heard a cry for it. The suffering of a righteous Abel is the beginning of a pattern of suffering that includes people like Job, Joseph, Daniel, and you and me today! That suffering even affected Jesus who came to a people who would not accept or receive Him as their own and would kill him on a cross.
However as the scripture says, "The serpent struck his (Jesus) heel, but He (Jesus) crushed his head." The death of Jesus satisfied divine justice.
Justice has been satisfied through the substitutionary sacrifice of the righteous Son of God.
Jesus is the righteous sufferer whose death hearlds salvation. And through faith in Him, we belong to Him.
We receive His shepherding, His care, and His everlasting life.
This Advent brings to us that realization that Jesus came to defeat the serpent that held mankind in the bo***ge of unfixable sin. We now can experience freedom!
