Wightman Methodist Church hosted our most recent Enrichment Event. This is a beautiful watercolor rendition of the historic church.
A Brief History:
Wightman Methodist Church was established in 1877, during a time of growth and renewal in the region. The congregation first gathered in a local meeting space known as Wheeler & Moseley Hall, where early services were held by candlelight and a small group of faithful believers formed the foundation of the church.
As the community grew, so did the church. Wightman became an important part of the Methodist circuit serving Newberry County and was later included in the Prosperity charge in the early 20th century. Through the years, the congregation expanded its ministries, nurtured spiritual formation, and remained a steady witness to the grace of Jesus Christ in the Prosperity community.
For generations, Wightman Methodist Church has stood as a place of worship, fellowship, and service—rooted in the Wesleyan tradition and committed to sharing the love of Christ. Its legacy continues in the lives of those who have gathered within its walls and in the ongoing work of ministry it inspires today.
The church is widely believed to have been named for Bishop William May Wightman (1808–1882), a distinguished South Carolina Methodist leader, educator, and bishop whose influence was deeply felt across the state during the late nineteenth century.
