Share the Plate with Fools Mission on August 16

Fools Mission was founded in 2010 with the vision of building bridges between privileged and immigrant families on the Peninsula. Our approach is to rely on friendship and community as an alternative to “caseloads”. We support each other through times of happiness and tragedy, good fortune and bad. We help level the gaps of power and privilege by volunteering to accompany each other in interactions with medical providers, schools, courts, and other entities that can be daunting when language, status, and circumstances make it easy for people to fall through the cracks.

We also give back to our wider community through our annual holiday gift and back-to-school supplies programs.

Share The Plate with Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center on July 19

“Grandma, have any Black people besides Martin Luther King Jr accomplished anything?” Domini asked his grandmother Carolyn Hoskins years ago during Black History Month. With the mission of showcasing the achievements of Black Americans, Carolyn went to work to answer him. She gathered sports memorabilia from her late husband, Robert Hoskins of the 49ers, added music and movies, books, political and historic artifacts, and for years hosted a seasonal popup at the county fair before securing a permanent location in downtown Redwood City in 2023.

The museum is a cultural treasure. Its mission is to educate the public about Black history and inspire visitors. It has hosted more than a thousand school children who come through on field trips as well as numerous community events including the Fixin’ SMC holiday party. Nancy Goodban is a volunteer who helps at community events whenever Carolyn asks.

The museum is open noon – 6:00 pm daily except Mondays, staffed by Carolyn and two of her adult children. It is well worth a visit – allow some time to get through the exhibits.

Share the Plate with the Center for Common Ground on June 21

This month’s Share the Plate recipient is the Center for Common Ground. Their goal is to educate and empower voters of color in voter suppression states. This has become even more important since the Supreme Court gutted section 2 of the Voting Rights Act with their decision in Louisiana vs Callais. We have been working with The Center for Common Ground for years by writing postcards and phone banking to inform people of how to register and vote in their locality. The Center also builds Democracy Centers to better know these communities: they build food banks if they need food, they provide internet access if they need it, they educate the community on the impact of new legislation e.g. HR1’s impact on healthcare, SNAP, etc. The Center for Common Ground is currently working on a “Beating Callais” campaign to target Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas with the goal electing state legislators that will end gerrymandering.

Share the Plate with Sonrisas Dental Health on April 19

This week’s Share the Plate recipient is Sonrisas Dental Health. Access to quality, affordable, equitable health care is the foundation for a healthy community, yet much of the progress made over decades on health care for the most vulnerable stands to be undone because of recent cuts to Medicaid. Sonrisas is a safety-net dental organization serving thousands of community members who face financial, physical, developmental, and cultural barriers to care through its clinics and thousands more children, families and elderly through community and school-based initiatives. In the Redwood City area alone, Sonrisas provides care to over 1,000 residents, in addition to school-based screening and oral health education to over 1,500 children every year.
