Share the Plate with Sonrisas Dental Health on April 19

This week’s Share the Plate recipient is Sonrisas Dental Health. Access to quality, affordable, equitable health care is the foundation for a healthy community, yet much of the progress made over decades on health care for the most vulnerable stands to be undone because of recent cuts to Medicaid. Sonrisas is a safety-net dental organization serving thousands of community members who face financial, physical, developmental, and cultural barriers to care through its clinics and thousands more children, families and elderly through community and school-based initiatives. In the Redwood City area alone, Sonrisas provides care to over 1,000 residents, in addition to school-based screening and oral health education to over 1,500 children every year.

Online donations can be made from the Friday before the service through the Tuesday following the service, using link https://www.uufrc.org/community/giving/ and writing “Share the Plate” in the memo line. Please make donations via charitable giving accounts (e.g. Donor Advisory Funds) payable to “UUFRC” and put the Share the Plate recipient name in the memo line. On the Sunday of the collection, all donations, unless otherwise specified, go to Share the Plate.

Share the Plate with Puente de la Costa Sur on March 15th

Our collection on Sunday, Mar 15th, will be donated to Puente de la Costa Sur. Puente de la Costa Sur works on the belief that self sufficiency is essential for turning dreams into reality. Every day, theywalk side-by-side with their South Coast neighbors as they cross thebridge toward independence. By advocating for health, education, and community development, they elevate their communities to buildconfidence for themselves. When people have equitable access tothe local resources that support their dreams, they’re one step closerto realizing them. Puente is currently embarking on a developmentplan that will guide them for years to come.

Share the Plate with CORA on February 15

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. CORA will be the recipient for our February Share the Plate Offering. Jennifer Kozicki, a representative from CORA, will join us to discuss CORA’s services and how they help survivors of domestic violence in our community.

Intimate partner abuse affects our entire community: one in four
women, one in seven men and one in two transgender individuals here in San Mateo County will experience domestic violence in their
lifetime. With numbers like this, it’s all but certain that someone we
know well has experienced domestic violence… even if they’ve never told us.

CORA is the only agency in San Mateo County solely dedicated to
helping those affected by intimate partner abuse. From counseling, to emergency housing, to legal assistance, their services are designed to provide safety, support, and healing. Through our Share the Plate offering this week, we at UUFRC can help CORA meet our community’s clear and pervasive need.

Share the Plate with Sequoia High School Dream Club on January 18

Our collection on Sunday, Jan 18th, will be donated to Sequoia High School Dream Club’s college scholarship fund through our Share-the-Plate program. This money is vital because undocumented students are shut out of many financial aid possibilities and these funds helps them continue their educations after high school.

Share the Plate with Kara on November 16

November’s Share-the-Plate recipient is Kara, a counseling and grief education organization that helps people reclaim lives of peace and meaning following the death of a loved one.

Each year, Kara serves approximately 6000 people in the greater Bay Area, offering one-on-one counseling, more than 60 specialized support groups, workshops, special events, a summer camp for kids, community outreach, crisis response and grief education to adults, families, teens and children. Services are free of charge; many are offered in Spanish. A large corps of trained volunteers enables the breadth and reach of the services.

Donations can be made from the Friday before the service through the Tuesday following the service, using PayPal link https://www.uufrc.org/community/giving/ and writing “Share the Plate” in the memo line. Share the Plate with Faith In Action Bay Area on October 19

Faith in Action Bay Area is a network of congregations and community leaders working to uphold the dignity of all people. We develop shared leadership, promote civic engagement, and lift up our faith values in order to confront power and transform systems. Faith in Action operates the Rapid Response Hotline, distributes the “red cards” to assist people to know their rights, and accompanies immigrants to their ICE court hearings.

The Belong Emergency Fund supports low-income community members who are at risk of deportation, homelessness, or displacement in San Mateo County.

Donations can be made from Friday, Oct. 17 through Tuesday Oct. 21, using PayPal link https://www.uufrc.org/community/giving/ and writing “Share the Plate” in the memo line. Please make donations via charitable giving accounts (e.g. Donor Advisory Funds) payable to “UUFRC” and put the Share the Plate recipient name in the memo line. On Sunday October 19, all donations, unless otherwise specified, go to Share the Plate.

Share the Plate with Upward Scholars on September 21

Upward Scholars promotes economic mobility and access to quality career pathways for adult immigrants from low-income households by helping them continue their education in community college, obtain higher-paying jobs, and serve as role models and advocates for their children and our community. The organization serves students right here in the Bay Area at San Mateo County’s three community colleges. Now more than ever, in our current political climate, Upward Scholars students need the support, encouragement and concrete help our donations can help ensure. Many UUFRC community members volunteer for Upward Scholars as tutors and conversation partners, and both Erika Pretell and Beth Harrison serve on the organization’s Board of Directors.

Donations can be made from the Friday before the service through the Tuesday following the service, using PayPal link https://www.uufrc.org/community/giving/ and writing “Share the Plate” in the memo line. On the Sunday of the collection, all donations, unless otherwise specified, go to Share the Plate.
