Play Your Part

Let us move into a new school year with a spirit of discernment and hope for renewal.

We have many parts in one body, but the parts don’t all have the same function. In the same way, though there are many of us, we are one body in Christ, and individually we belong to each other.
Romans 12:4-5

God of all imagination and creativity, you made me in your image and designed me for a unique purpose in your world. Keep me on the path toward you and away from the distractions that make me question who I am.

Belonging in God’s Family

(Passage)
The immigrants who have joined me, serving me and loving my name, becoming my servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath without making it impure, and those who hold fast to my covenant: I will bring them to my holy mountain, and bring them joy in my house of prayer. I will accept their entirely burned offerings and sacrifices on my altar. My house will be known as a house of prayer for all peoples, says the Lord God, who gathers Israel’s outcasts. I will gather still others to those I have already gathered.
Isaiah 56:6-8

In Isaiah 56:6-8, God speaks to people who were often treated as outsiders—immigrants living in a land where they were not always welcomed or fully accepted. While others may have seen them through labels like foreigner or outsider, God saw something more. Instead of drawing lines based on where they came from or who they were, God welcomed those who chose to follow God’s ways.

In God’s family, belonging isn’t determined by popularity, appearance, ability, or the labels assigned by society. It’s found in relationship with God and in reflecting God’s love and justice. That’s good news when we feel different, overlooked, or out of place. We belong because God claims and loves us. And when we know we belong, we can help others experience that same welcome.

(Question to Ponder)
Who might be feeling like an outsider this week, and how could you help them know they belong?

(Prayer)
God of every people, thank you for showing me that I belong. Help me notice those who feel left out, and give me the courage to welcome them with your love.

Navigating Unexpected Situations

Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me,” and they moved closer. He said, “I’m your brother Joseph! The one you sold to Egypt. Now, don’t be upset and don’t be angry with yourselves that you sold me here. Actually, God sent me before you to save lives.”

Genesis 45:4-5

"New beginnings can be exciting, but they can also bring old hurts and unresolved tensions. Maybe it’s disappointment about a past event, friendship drama, or uncertainty about what’s ahead. Maybe it’s trepidation about stepping into a new school, team, or group and feeling like a stranger.

Joseph knew all of those feelings. Betrayed by his brothers and taken far from home, he found himself in an unfamiliar place with every reason to become bitter. Yet when he looked back, he saw that God was at work even through the hardest parts of his story.

Transformation isn’t pretending that worry or pain never occurred. It’s allowing God to shape our hearts right where we are. Like Joseph, we can choose forgiveness over bitterness, hope over resentment, community over isolation, and kindness over revenge. As we navigate unexpected situations, God journeys with us, helping us grow and perhaps become a source of encouragement and hope for others."

Ever-present God, help me trust that you are still at work, even when life doesn’t go as planned. Transform my heart and renew my mind so I can share your love with others.

✝️ Take a deep breath. As you inhale, breathe in God’s renewing hope, peace, and love.

✝️ As you exhale, release fear, pressure, doubt, and anxiety.

✝️ In this moment, remember: God is near, and you are not alone.

God, help me slow down enough to notice your presence. Renew my heart in moments of stillness and quiet. Teach me to listen for your voice beyond all the noise around me.

"The economy of God’s kingdom is very different from the economy of the world. What seems insignificant to the world is, for Jesus, enough: it is what is needed, the starting point for doing something. Jesus was about to do something amazing, but before that, he did something with this group of disciples. We can be part of the blessing that God will bestow when we place in God’s hands the blessing God has already given us, even when it seems small."

Jesus, I place my life in your hands so that you may use my gifts, talents, and time. Help me to inspire others to place their lives in your hands.
