A message from the clergy and leaders of Temple Menorah:
We know you join us in wishing the first responders and the firefighters all of the support and strength to continue to push forward. Many of us have friends and family who are deeply impacted by the fires and we hope they have all found a safe place to be. As a community we have two priorities at this time: physical safety and emotional well-being. We are taking precautions in Tuvia and at JLL to follow all of the local guidance on air quality. Felicia Flores, Tuvia Director, and Rabbi Rebeccah, Rabbi-Educator and leader of JLL have already been preparing for the next many days together with head of maintenance Francisco Gonzalez. Our children and staff will be safe and well participating in all Temple Menorah functions.
Regarding emotional well-being, you may know that last night the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center burned entirely in the Eaton Fire. It is a historical synagogue and it was emotional to hear a colleague describing removing the twelve Torah scrolls from the ark as ash fell in the parking lot. We know that the firefighters and so many residents of Los Angeles are at risk and we pray for their safety and for the quick end to the winds and the fires.
For all of us who have children at home, be aware that they hear so much and at this time, language is severe because the situation is a crisis. Be prepared to answer questions big and small about the fires, they may worry for themselves, or you, for their home or school. We are happy to speak with you individually if there is more support we can provide. With kids, depending on their age, sometimes a question expresses a sincere concern about the world, and sometimes, it is a simple curiosity that will pass even before the question is fully out of their mouth. Listen fully first, read what they are asking and keep answers reassuring and short. Try to limit the images and media they see. And if this is a lot for you as a grown up, consider a news diet, it is proven to reduce stress.
These words from Ecclesiastes have guided us these past 24 hours: “Two are better than one, together their work is greater. Should they fall, one can lift the other; but woe to him who is alone when he falls and there is no one to lift him!”
You are not alone; we are thinking of you and we are here for you.
Warmly,
Rabbi Deborah Schuldenfrei, Interim Senior Rabbi
Rabbi Rebeccah Yussman, Rabbi-Educator
Cantor Melanie Fine, Cantor
Ilise Welter, Executive Director
Felicia Flores, Director of Early Childhood Education
