Jewish tradition teaches that what we do matters beyond ourselves.

Often, the things that shape us most are not the big moments we remember, but the small ones.

A conversation around the dinner table. A ride home after a long day. A word of encouragement when we needed it most.

A tradition passed down without realizing it would one day become part of who we are.

The values we model, the kindness we show, and the wisdom we share often stay with people longer than we realize.

On Global Day of Parents, we recognize the many ways parents, grandparents, guardians, and caregivers help guide the next generation.

As we move from generation to generation, we carry forward far more than traditions. We carry forward the love, care, and values that continue to shape our families, our communities, and our lives.

Today, we celebrate those who show up day after day, often without recognition, and the lasting difference they make in the lives around them.

Several of the archival photos shared here come from Rabbi Emeritus Hillel Cohn's personal collection. We are grateful to him for helping preserve and share these moments from our congregation's history.

Not everyone grows up feeling fully seen. Not everyone grows up believing there will always be a place for them at the table.

As Pride Month begins, we are reminded that community matters most when it creates room for people to arrive as they are, not as who they were told to be.

At Congregation Emanu El, we believe belonging is not something that should be earned. It is something human beings deserve.

To our LGBTQ+ community members, families, friends, and neighbors: we are grateful you are here, and our community is better because of you.

Happy Pride Month. 🌈

Be strong.
Be strong.
And may we all be strengthened.

A line Rabbi Cantor Bern-Vogel shared in this month’s bulletin, one that’s been said for generations when we reach the end of a chapter and begin again.

As we move through endings and beginnings, it’s a reminder we don’t carry strength alone.

Chazak chazak v’nitchazek.

📅 Our June 2026 Bulletin is here.

As summer begins to settle in, Shabbat gives us a chance to pause, reconnect, and gather together.

This month at Congregation Emanu El, we’ll celebrate new leadership, honor longtime volunteers, share meals, learn together, and continue conversations about what Jewish community can look like for the future here in Redlands.

We’re looking forward to sharing the month with you.

This Memorial Day, we find ourselves sitting with a familiar phrase: “may their memory be a blessing.”

Today carries the weight of remembrance. The names, the stories, the lives given in service, and the people who continue carrying that loss.

In our tradition, memory isn’t just something we hold. It asks something of us. Not all at once, and not perfectly, but in the small ways we move through the world and care for each other.

Zichronam livracha. May their memories be a blessing, and may we grow into that, in our own ways, over time.

Shavuot is often described as the celebration of receiving Torah, but at its heart, it is also about gathering together and choosing what kind of community we want to build.

On Friday evening, our community came together across generations to learn, reflect, sing, listen, and celebrate. Children lifted up their voices and carried Torah, families gathered in warm conversation, and we were especially honored to celebrate an adult conversion and hear a moving reflection on the journey toward Judaism, belonging, and community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so meaningful through your presence, voices, stories, and celebration, and to Rabbi Cantor Bern-Vogel for leading such a beautiful service.

With gratitude for a beautiful Shavuot weekend from all of us at Congregation Emanu El.

Most of us have had that moment.

Someone says something. In a conversation, a speech, a song, a random Tuesday. And it lands differently than it did the last time you heard it. Like something shifted in you just enough to finally let it in.

Jewish tradition has a name for that moment. And an entire holiday built around it.

Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. But one of its most enduring teachings isn't about the laws themselves. It's about how they were received.

Every person there heard the same voice. And understood it differently.

Same moment. Different meaning. Depending on who you were, what you'd lived, what you were ready to carry.

That idea has stayed alive for thousands of years because it doesn't let anyone off the hook. And it doesn't leave anyone out either. You don't have to be the same to belong to the same story.

That's the kind of idea that makes you want to stay up a little later.

There's a tradition on Shavuot to learn through the night and eat dairy foods. Cheesecake very much included.

Whether you're marking the holiday, just curious, or simply here, you belong to this story too.

Chag Sameach from all of us at Congregation Emanu El. 🕯️

Today, we mourn alongside the members of the Islamic Center of San Diego and all those affected by this heartbreaking act of violence.

Congregation Emanu El stands in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors and sends our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the victims, their families, and the entire community.

May healing, peace, and strength surround all those carrying pain today.

There’s something about this time of year that feels layered.

We’re in the middle of counting the Omer, moving toward Shavuot, thinking about what it means to receive something meaningful and carry it forward. And at the same time, it’s May. A month that naturally brings up gratitude for the people who nurture, show up, and hold things together.

Our Sisterhood Gift Shop has long been part of that rhythm. Not just as a place to pick something up, but as one of those corners of the synagogue where people linger, browse, and find things that feel personal.

A piece of jewelry. A book that sparks curiosity. Something simple that ends up meaning more later.

If you’d like to stop by, just reach out to the office and we’ll help you find a time.

Thank you for supporting the Gift Shop. It’s a small part of something much bigger, and it really does make a difference.

In a couple days, we will be welcoming Symphonie Jeunesse to our space.

This San Bernardino youth string orchestra is made up of middle and high school students who are continuing to deepen their musical training.

Since 2008, it’s been a place where that commitment grows over time, through rehearsal, discipline, and showing up again and again.

At Congregation Emanu El, we believe our doors exist for exactly this. To welcome the community in, to make space for young people doing extraordinary things, and to share an evening that reminds us what we’re all capable of when someone believes in us.

If you’ve never heard them before, this is a good night to come sit in and listen.

Free admission. All are welcome.
