Today, Maundy Thursday is described in John 13:1-17. Foot washing is: A practice of hospitality used by servants, and by Jesus Christ to express his servanthood for His followers; a sign of courteous hospitality, and as a symbol of spiritual cleansing.
But why would Christ do this? If the disciples’ feet needed washing, they could wash them themselves; there are four reasons why Christ did this: —
1. That he might testify to his love for his disciples, v. 1, 2.
2. That he might give an instance of his own voluntary humility.
3. That he might signify to them spiritual washing, which is referred to in his sermon with Peter, v. 6–11.
4. That he might provide an example…
Can you get off on your high horse, about what you accomplished, and where you rank, take off your garment, put a towel around your waist, and wash somebody’s feet? Can you pass The Towel Test?
