We are a family friendly parish located in western Metro Detroit under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchal Parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA (Moscow Patriarchate). Today we observe the SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS to honor all who have "fought the good fight unto the end and have kept the faith." This Sunday comes after we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Church of Christ. The icon captures the uniqueness of this feast. The composition come from ancient times--

Christ in robes is seated in the very center. His right hand is outstretched in blessing, while the left holds the Gospel . Notice too, at the left, the Holy Virgin and at the right, St John the Baptist.

Below Christ is the throne of judgement with the bible aid on it. Bowing in prayer Adam at the left and Eve at the right. Surrounding the scene are the ranks of the saints: Angels, Apostles, Martyrs, Hierarchs and Hermits. At the top are the sun, moon and stars, and outside the circle at the top are prophet kings.

At the lower portion of the icon is PARADISE, with its trees and flowers. Abraham and Jaco occupy the thrones, surrounded by the righteous ones resting with them. Between them, clutching the cross, is the good(repentent) thief, saved by his faith in Christ crucified.

The scene speaks of the SECOND COMING and of the LAST JUDGEMENT. (taken from the Orhtodox Weekly Bulletin)

PENTECOST SUNDAY: It is the Birthday of the Church!

The work of the Church on Pentecost continues to this day. It is our sacred calling to gather others into the "net" of the Church, for we, too are the "fishers of men". On this great Feast, it is customary to decorate our churches with greenery and flowers, thus Expressing our joy and thanksgiving to God for renewing us through the Lifegiving Spirit. This serves as a reminder that just as nature is renewed at the coming of Spring, so too, the Church and her faithful have been renewed by the coming of the Holy Spirit.

On this 50th day after Pascha, lengthy, elaborate kneeling prayers are prescribed, as we repeatedly invoke the Holy Spirit to COME AND DWELL WITHIN US. The Holy Spirit comes today, strengthening and encouraging every Orthodox Christian as we strive to spread God's Word to the unchurched.

On this day, we observe the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, who had gone to Jerusalem on the command of our Lord to await this Divine Guidance from above. With the rushing of the wind and the descent of the tongues of fire, the Holy Spirit came to these loyal, but timid, followers of Christ. They were filled with the zeal necessary to undertake and complete the commission given to them: GO AND TEACH ALL NATIONS! The Book of Acts tells us that over 3,000 "guests" celebrated this birthday, with them converting to Christianity that day when the Apostles took the message of the Gospel into the streets of Jerusalem.

Thursday, May 21 was the Holy Feast of Ascension -

40 days after Christ's Resurrection, the Ascension of our Lord is a cornerstone of Orthodox Christian belief, marking the return of the resurrected Christ to His Father in glory.

It signifies the triumph of humanity and the opening of the path to heaven for all who follow Christ. The Ascension also symbolizes the union of heaven and earth and the promise of Christ's return! Then the 11 disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped Him: but some doubted. And Jesus came a spake unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; He the believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. So the, after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven and sat on the right had of God. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

Jesus heals the Paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda- From Todays Gospel reading John:5

The Lord encountered the Paralytic who had been suffering from his condition for 38 years. This man had hoped to reach the waters at the Pool of Bethesda, so that he might be healed. Jesus did not help him into the pool; but he cured the paralytic, "RISE, TAKE UP YOUR BED AND WALK", Jesus Christ commanded. The paralytic was healed!

Per the Orthodox Weekly Bulletin: - Today we are reminded that our Lord has power over physical and spiritual infirmities. "SIN NO MORE" He advises the paralytic, showing His divine concern for the total person. Christ can free all of us from the "paralysis" that sin causes to our soul. He can release us from the heavy burden that our transgressions place upon us. "DO YOU WANT TO BE MADE WELL?" This question is constantly asked of us by our Saviour. Christ CAN heal us, body and soul, if we turn to Him and seek His assistance.

In the Book of Acts(Acts 9:32-35) Apostle Peter also healed a paralyzed man. This miraculous healing demonstrates the power of God working through the apostles, but also serves as a testament to the early church's faith and the spread of the Gospel.

On this day, the Church commemorates the appearance of the Risen Savior to His disciples on the eighth day after His Resurrection from the dead. According to the Gospel of John, the Apostle Thomas, was not present at Christ’s first appearance and expressed doubt about His Resurrection.

Thomas wished to see with his own eyes the wounds from the nails in his Teacher’s hands in order to believe the miracle. Eight days later, the Lord again stood before the apostles behind closed doors and invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Then the shaken disciple uttered his confession of faith: “My Lord and my God!”

Strengthening Thomas and all future Christians, the Savior spoke words that have become a spiritual support for millions of believers: “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

St. Gregory the Theologian called this day “Renewal,” urging every Christian to leave old habits behind and begin a new life, drawing on the fruits of Christ’s redemptive feat. The symbolism of the eighth day points to the eternity of the coming Kingdom of God, where the Paschal rejoicing of the righteous will be without end.
